I'm thinking about you too
Another blush creeps up, and Izzy's grin deepens.
Enrico:
I'm a selfish prick. I don't know what time I'll be home, but I want to see you.
Me:
Not selfish at all. I'll wait for you.
Enrico:
I break out laughing. Izzy's head whips to me, all pretense of not caring or sensing what I'm doing gone. "What?"
"Your brother gave me the thumbs up."
"He did not," she sounds outraged and, as if it were the most natural thing in the world, snatches the phone from my hand. "Oh, that cretin!"
Izzy's fingers fly across the screen, mischief sparkling in her eyes.
"What are you doing?" I ask, already half-laughing.
"Just helping him up his emoji game."
She types something quickly and hits send with a flourish.
My phone dings.
Izzy (pretending to be me):
I gasp. "Izzy!"
She dissolves into giggles just as my phone rings withhisname flashing across the screen. I answer, trying and failing to smother the laughter in my voice.
"Hello?"
"Izzy?" Enrico's voice growls through the speaker, low and dangerous. I have no idea how he knows she typed that message, but he does. "What the fuck was that?"
That's it. Both of us collapse into uncontrollable laughter, rolling onto the floor like a pair of teenagers. Shadow barks at the chaos, tail wagging, and immediately joins in, tugging on Izzy's hair, then mine, like he's trying to decide who to save first.
"Give me the phone," Izzy gasps between laughs. "I need to defend my art."
"Don't you dare," I squeal, holding it out of reach.
"I'm going to strangle her," Enrico mutters from the speaker. "Tell her that. Slowly. With feeling."
Izzy's still howling as she calls out, "Tell him he was warned!" and then she hums,Put a ring on it, from the songSingle Ladies.
Shadow howls back.
I fall onto my back, breathless, grinning like an idiot.
God help me… I've never felt more alive.
I told Cat I wouldn't make it to dinner, but the longer Marcello, Stephano, and I talk, the more we're going in circles. Every new theory opens another crack, another branch of possibility. Until finally, I've had enough.
"Let's up the guards," I say, pushing back from the table. "Tomorrow I'll try to talk to ourDonagain, see if he'll finally see some sense. We'll meet again tomorrow afternoon or the day after."
