“That isn’t even ten years. My dad and Indi, they’re like eighteen years apart, and oh!” I jump up and down on the spot. “I have the craziest news!”
He waits as if my head may explode any second. “You gonna elaborate or are we gonna play charades?”
“I’m gonna be a big sister!”
His brow furrows. “Indigo’s pregnant?”
“Yep.” I pop the P. “Of course, I knew it was gonna happen. They weren’t so subtle about it; inviting me over for dinner cryptically to give me, my brother, and Cami the good news. How crazy is that?”
“How do you feel about it?”
I shrug. “I’m over the moon. My dad is an amazing father, and now he’s with Indi, I think it’s sweet that he wants a kid with her. Not that I want to think about my dad doing it, gross.” I pull a face.
“That’s neat.”
“It’s something, but really exciting. I can’t wait to buy baby clothes, but now Dad wants to know the sex of the baby, and Indi wants it to be a surprise.”
“Who’s gonna win out?” Cale asks.
I smirk. “Indigo.”
The news certainly had me in a bind…
“You’re what?” I drop my cutlery with a clang onto my plate. I glance at Kai and he shrugs, giving me a knowing smirk.
Dad puts his hand over Indigo’s at the table. Both of them beam, but Indigo’s is more of a ‘holy fuck I can’t believe this is happening’ kinda look.
With both hands over my mouth; I can’t even move. I think I’m in shock, but in a good way. I mean, it’s kinda crazy at my dad’s age, but he’s not ninety or anything. And he and Indi have made no secret of the fact that they’ve been trying for a while. Which is disgusting in its own right because nobody wants to think of their parent having sex. But Dad is the happiest I’ve ever seen him, and that’s what matters. He gazes at Indi adoringly as me and Cami both leap out of our chairs to hug Indi. We’re all crying and jumping around in jubilation.
I turn and hug Dad, slapping him on the shoulder. “You old dog.” I grin.
Kai comes around the table to hug Dad and Indi, his enthusiasm isn’t as emotional and crazy as mine, but that’s Kai for you. He’s still a teenager and has more important things to do, like play video games and hang out with his friends. He’s happy-go-lucky.
“Way to go, Dad,” Kai says.
“Needless to say, we’re both very happy with the news,” Dad goes on. “And I know it’s awkward for you kids having a baby around when you’re all grown up, well, not so much you Camille, we’ve still got you for a few years yet.”
“I think it’s the best news ever!” Cami declares as I throw an arm around her neck.
“I do, too.” I grin.
“Does that mean we’re gonna be unpaid babysitters?” Kai complains.
Dad laughs. “Leaving a baby with you, son, is the last thing I’d do, so I think you’re off the hook on that one.”
Kai blows air out of his cheeks in relief.
“How far along are you?” I ask as Dad and Indigo share a quick kiss.
Indi wipes her eyes and says, “I’m three months. We wanted to wait until I was past the first trimester before we said anything.”
“Makes sense.” I smile. “I had a sixth sense when you were all glowy about dinner. You couldn’t keep the smile off your face.”
Indi smiles, her eyes watery. “I wanted to shout it from the rooftops, believe me, but we wanted you all to be here.”
I squeeze her hand.
“If it’s a girl, can we call her Tulip?” Camille blurts. “I love that name.”
