My life still revolved around Hayes and always would, but I could feel the energy change around me. Disapproving almost, and it made me snap.

“I’m doing this, Hayes. I have to be here… So don’t ask me to move on because I won’t.”

I held back tears.

“I can’t.”

I sounded crazy, talking to no one out here, but if he were here, I knew exactly how he would respond. I could feel him, though. Through the wind that blew through my hair, when the sun warmed my skin, and even on nights when the stars twinkled extra bright.

He was always with me, whether I saw him or not.

Even in death, he found a way to be with me.

Time went by too fast when I was here, and before I knew it, I had to head back to campus. A long six-hour drive awaited me, but it was always worth it.

I then pushed myself to my feet. I gathered my blanket and other belongings and walked over to his headstone.

“I love you, Hayes. Always. I’ll be back soon.”

Resting my hand on the marble, I tilted my head up and found myself lost in the beauty of the sunset. The sun was dwindling down, casting beautiful hues of oranges and reds on the horizon. I believed it was him saying goodbye.

It’s time to smile again, pretty girl.

So, I smiled.
