“So, you’re just going to ride in some random ass person’s car for three hours?” He said it as if it was the most ridiculous thing he had ever heard. “You’ll get there late as fuck, anyway. What’s the point?”

Sighing, I started to shove my belongings into my bag.

“The point is I want to be there. I don’t want to get up and leave at eleven in the morning because I know how it goes. We never leave early after an away game. And I don’t want to spend the day on a bus when I should be spending it with her.”

Out of the corner of my eye, I could see him shaking his head.

“Fuck… alright. Be careful, and at least text me to let me know you made it.”

I stopped for a moment, halting my movements. I regarded him closely. He wasn’t going to argue with me? He wasn’t going to tell me that I shouldn’t go and just wait until tomorrow?

I was stunned.

“Tell her I said happy birthday.” He grunted, glancing down at his feet before stalking off in the opposite direction.

Laughing, I watched him walk off.

“I will…” I mumbled.

Caught off guard by Mal, I suddenly realized I had five minutes left to spare and got my ass into gear. On my way out, I let Coach know that I was leaving for my girl’s birthday and that I wouldn’t be riding back with them. With a ‘be careful’ and a pat on the shoulder, I ran out of the locker room and hauled ass outside where I found the car waiting for me.

I’m comin’, Blue.

WREN

“You need to quit worrying, Wren. I’m sure he’s busy and will call you soon.” Kate reassured me as she continued scrolling on her phone as she lay in her bed.

It had been over an hour since I last heard from him, and I hadn’t stopped watching my phone. With the screen facing upward and my back resting against my headboard, I couldn’t tear my eyes away from it.

“I know, I know… do you think maybe I should call him?”

She laughed.

“Babe, just relax. That man will call you. He’s probably showering, eating, talking with his team… any one of those.”

God, I sounded desperate, but I couldn’t help it. I missed him unbelievably.

“You’re right.” I sighed and slowly slid my back down the headboard so my head was lying on the pillow. I was just paranoid. I wasn’t used to the whole having a boyfriend thing yet, and I was probably just overreacting.

Right?

I already tried watching TV, playing a game on my phone, and writing in my journal, hoping it would keep my mind off him calling, but nothing seemed to work. In the end, I just decided to lie here and wallow in worry.

“I know I’m right.” She added as my eyes went to her. “Maybe you just need to rest your eyes for a bit, and that’ll help. Put your phone on the ringer. That way you’ll be able to hear it when it goes off.”

Sleep? The last thing I wanted to do was fall asleep and miss my chance to talk to him, but maybe she was right. Maybe it would help.

“Have you talked to Hendricks at all?” I asked, knowing I was just torturing myself if she were to say yes.

“A little, but he said he would text me tomorrow.”

I felt a little relieved, but not completely.

“Just close your eyes, Wren. It’ll calm you down.”
