Emily nods, her eyes glistening with tears. “Mo chuisle,” she repeats.

“Then, I believe you have your answer.” Moira winks at me and stands back.

I take the ring and hold Emily’s hand, repeating the question. “Emily, an pogfaidh tu liom? Will you marry me?”

Her face breaks into a wide smile. “Yes. I mean, we’re already married, but yes, I’d love to marry you a second time.”

I slip the engagement ring onto Emily’s finger. She raises her hand, grinning as the diamond catches the daylight pouring into the room from between the vertical blinds at the window.

“Mom, it’s beautiful,” she squeals.

“A beautiful ring for my beautiful baby.”

Then, Emily throws herself onto me, almost sending me toppling backwards, her arms wrapped around my neck. She kisses my lips, fingers entwined in my hair, and murmurs, “I love you, Eoghan. You could ask me to marry you every day for the rest of our lives, and the answer will always be yes.”

I stand up and pull Emily onto her feet, smoothing the hair away from her face. The scratches from Olivia’s knife lining her face and underneath her jawline are starting to crust over and heal. There are Band-aids on her right hand, and abandage around her foot, but Emily has never looked more beautiful.

“I love you, mo chroi.” I hug her tightly, and she flinches. “Emily? What is it? Are you hurt?”

“No.” She shakes her head, her eyes flashing towards her mom. “I’m fine.”

“Are you sure? Do you need a doctor to come and check you over?” I scan her body, looking for a sign that she has an injury I haven’t noticed before.

“No, I’m not hurt.” There’s something she isn’t telling me though.

“Are you going to tell him, Emily, or shall I?” Moira asks.

“Tell me what?” My gaze bounces between them and then to Terry, whose brows are lowered in confusion.

“Mom?” Emily narrows her eyes. “How did you find out?”

Moira smiles. “You can’t hide anything from me, Emily. I’m your mom.”

“I beg to differ,” Terry says from the hospital bed. “She managed to hide a husband from you.”

“That was different.” Moira dismisses him with a wave of her hand. “She was in another country at the time.”

Terry chuckles.

“What’s going on?” I ask Emily.

She chews her bottom lip, and I realize the subtle difference in her appearance. Her skin is glowing with health as though she has just returned from a spa vacation.

“I’m pregnant.” She scrunches her eyes as if unsure of my reaction.

“You’re … pregnant.” My eyes travel down to her belly, currently hidden beneath an oversized sweatshirt, and I instinctively place my hand over her abdomen. “Are you sure?”

She nods. “I forgot to take my pills. I was kind of sidetracked. You’re not … angry, are you?”

I hear a low growl from the bed and ignore it. “How could I possibly be angry about it, Emily? You’re having our baby. I’m going to be a dad!”

I glance at Terry, whose eyes are filled with tears.

“We’re having a baby!” I pick Emily up and spin her around before setting her down and guiding her to the visitor’s seat. “Sorry, I didn’t hurt you, did I? I’ll be more careful, I promise.”

Laughing, Emily pulls my head close to hers, and whispers, “Please don’t be more careful. We’ve a lot of catching up to do.”
