“It’s not fair he doesn’t get to be part of this,” Nate ground out, fighting back the emotions plaguing him.

“No, it’s not,” I whispered, struggling with my own tears. “But James believed in the man you were gonna be from the moment he met you. You just have to believe in yourself now, because we both know that smart-ass was never wrong.”

He smiled, closing his eyes for a second and inhaling a deep breath.

When they opened again, there was something different in them.

Something raw.

Fierce.

And determined.

“I hate it when he’s fucking right,” Nate said. That strength in his voice wrapped around me, and I couldn’t stop the laughter that bubbled up.

“Me too,” I rasped through tears. “Me too.”
