“Does this mean I have to pretend we’re engaged every time I meet your brother now?”

A big, smug smile stretches over his face, and I instantly know I’ve said the wrong thing.

“You planning on being around enough to meet him again?”

I roll my eyes at him.

“Let me take you on a date first before you start planning our whole future, geez.” He grins.

I try to fight the smile pulling at my lips by rolling my eyes again. “You’re forgetting that I still haven’t said yes.”

“But you want to.” He says confidently.

I ignore him and the warmth spreading in my core. “You didn’t answer my question.”

He leans forward. “No, you don’t have to pretend. I’ll clear it up next time I see him.”

“Okay.” I smile.

“Okay.” He smiles.

“So, if he’s the worst, do you want me to kidnap him so he can’t steal your story?”

“Tempting, but too much jail time.”

“Fill his gas tank with sugar? Change his shampoo to Nair? Steal all of his pants?”

“I like that you live in a teenage prank movie.” He grins.

I fight a laugh and then lean back in my seat and cross my arms in front of me. I channel mafia boss energy as I stare him down.

“Okay, I forgive you.”

“Yeah?” His smile is so genuine and childlike.

“Yes,” I say. “But on one condition.”

“Name it.”

“I want exclusive use of the hot tub.”

He laughs. “Wow. You drive a hard bargain.” He leans in a little. “Just to clarify, this is so we don’t accidentally make hot tub babies?”

I blush at the insinuation and decide to ignore him. “Take it or leave it.”

He grins at me. “Deal.”

We both sip our drinks, eyes on each other.

“It’s probably for the best anyway.” Lou settles back on his side of the table.

“What is?”

“Not sharing the hot tub.” He says.

“Why?” I ask, a little too fast and a little too whiney.

He grins at my reaction. “You told me you don’t like blurring lines.”
