“The hike?” I clarify.

“Yeah.” He nods.

I feel my chest deflate knowing this flirty little game just ended, and I lost.

“It was good,” I say.

He smirks. “Such a way with words.”

I huff out a defeated sigh. “It was fun.” Then I think about what I really thought. “Or it wasn’t actually, but it was nice at the top.”

“Not a big fan of the walk up?”

“Is anyone?” I say.

He shrugs. “I think it’s fun.”

“Ugh.” I roll my eyes. “Of course you do.”

He laughs. “Don’t you do this kind of thing for a living? I thought you’d love it.”

“Very much not.” I avert my gaze, skimming my hand along the water as I feel his eyes on me.

“Why do you do it then?” He asks gently.

“It’s the job they offered me.”

“And you’re good at it.” He says it like a statement.

I look up at him, fighting a blush and forcing in the confidence. “And I’m good at it.”

We both smile at each other.

“What do you want to do then?” He asks.

I brush my wet hair back. “I’m making it sound bad. I do like my job. I love the magazine.”

“That’s good.” He smirks. “But what do youwantto do? If you could pick anything.”

I let out an exhale through my lips. “I want to work at Lure.” I nod assertively. “But I don’t want to do wellbeing or travel anymore — even though I do love it most of the time — but I want to write about trends. Like, what the most talked about things are that day, what’s going viral, but make it my own.”

“I bet you’d be good at that too.” He says.

I shrug but fail to hide my smile.

“Do they know you want to write that?” He asks.

“No.” I laugh. “I mean, maybe. I hint a lot.”

“You hint?” He says, amused.

“Yeah. I hint.”

“You couldn’t just ask?”

“Nah.” I shake my head. “My boss will move me over when she thinks I’m ready, I’m sure of it.”

“Okay.” He says as if he doesn’t believe me.
