“Go on.”

“Can you not answer my next question so I can give you your punishment for losing the game?”

I laugh. “That’s cheating.”

“Or is it genius?” He grins.

I laugh louder, my hand finding his stubble again and raking through it. “I’m really happy you’re here,” I whisper.

He snakes his hand down to my hip and pulls me closer.

“I’ve never been happier about having to see my parents.” He says.

I laugh as he kisses me. His lips peppering lazy pecks on mine.

“I had this whole thing planned of stuff we could do today,” I say. “But I really just want to stay here and do nothing with you.”

He grins. “Nothing sounds perfect.”

“Good,” I say.

He flips me on my back and hovers over me. “After this.”

He smirks at me before finding his way between my legs, and after making me scream louder than ever before, we do the nothing we planned.

With nothing involving endless kisses, cuddling in bed and on the couch, perfectly sleepy post-nap sex, feasting on pizza, Lou on his knees in our tiny shower making my screams echo against the tiled walls, and his hands on my skin at all times, it’s hard to ever want anything but this.

Anything but him.

Lou pulls on his perfectly crisp shirt that I watched him iron in nothing but his boxers like some domestic wet dream. I finally pick an appropriate dress that’s knee length and doesn’t dip too low into my cleavage — which Lou teases me endlessly about how they’ll know I have boobs.

Lou keeps my hand in his like always, both on the subway Uptown and when we step through the doors to the fancyrestaurant. I wonder if anything could ever ruin how happy I feel right at this moment.

“Surprise!”

And that does it.

AIN'T NOTHING LIKE A FAKE ENGAGEMENT PARTY, BECAUSE A FAKE ENGAGEMENT PARTY DON'T STOP

I knowhow deer feel now.

I know how they feel when they run into the road. I know how they feel with headlights turning to panic.

I turn my gaze to Lou, and based on his expression, he also feels like he’s run straight in front of the same truck as me.

“Mom.” He says almost in a daze to the woman walking up to us with a sly grin on her face. “Hi.”

“Oh, they’re definitely surprised!” She says to the man coming up next to her.

He looks like an older Lou. Same height, same build, but with saggier cheeks and grey hair.

“We got ‘em!” He pumps his fist.

“What-” Lou starts, looking around. “What’s going on?”

His mom grabs him by the shoulders. “It’s your engagement party, silly.” She kisses his cheeks in the air without actually touching him.
