Before I could argue, Illiamor reappeared in front of me, eyes shining bright with anticipation.

I glanced back at Longshot, knowing I couldn’t let any of these ghosts down. “Too late now, Longshot. Illiamor, where are—”

I didn’t get the chance to finish my question before I saw them. Eyes shimmered in the darkness first, followed by the rest of their bodies. I gasped as they all moved forward, overwhelmed by the sheer number of them. There were hundreds of ghost women—the only gender who was able to be an avatar. All these women had lost Illiapol and been served to the palace as dinner through so many generations.

I clutched my stomach and had to force myself not to be sick at the thought, especially since I could have ended up as one of them.

Malice moved closer to me, his concern written on his face. “What is it, Jen, what’s wrong?” he asked.

“There’s so many,” I whispered. “Hundreds.”

Malice cursed beneath his breath. “We only have—”

“Iknow.”

“Maybe some of them can double up,” Surge suggested.

I tried to fit two into each egg, and much to our surprise, it worked. So, we attempted three, until we found an upper limit atsix. I transferred the ghosts to the eggs as quickly as I could, but it was a time consuming task, and time was not on our side.

Surge stepped in to help, and held up a glowing orb with a proud grin. “It’s just as easy here as it was on Halla. Next!”

The process went much faster, and before long we had all the ghosts encapsulated into the eggs. As we gently packed them for transport, a familiar voice interrupted us…or rather, me, since I was the only one who could see and hear her.

She glanced at me hopefully. “Would it be…could I join them?”

“Grass,” I said, not at all happy to see her there, and I even heard a few people behind me gasp when I said her name out loud considering the havoc she’d created for us. “You possessed me. Tried to fuck my boyfriends and Surge with my body. You tried to kill Surge and who knows what else. What makes you think I would do anything to help you go back to a planet where you can possess people again?”

Discord seethed. “You can’t be seriously thinking of taking her after she tried to kill Surge!”

I ignored Discord because I wanted to hear Grass’ excuse.

The ghost actually looked…contrite. “Okay, so I screwed up,” she admitted quietly. “I was just having some fun. Do you have any idea how boring being dead is?”

I could only imagine, not that boredom gave her a pass for her behavior.

“I…I don’t want to be left here alone,” she whispered.

Surge passed me an egg that was not glowing. No other ghost was in it. In fact, we had a few empty eggs left over.

I met his gaze, shocked he was being so magnanimous when Grass had nearly cost him his life. “Are you sure?”

“Everyone deserves a second chance, Jenny.”

“You are a dumbfuck, Surge,” Discord hissed, then walked away.

I looked back at Grass. “All aboard, I guess.”

She beamed. I focused.Waterfall.One deep breath later, she was gone.

I added the egg to the others. “Onto Halla, then.”

CHAPTER 32

Malice

The nighttime trip to Halla passed faster than expected, which suited me just fine since I had plans.

Once we parked in front of Sarah’s manor and everyone disembarked, I gently grabbed Jenny’s arm to hold her back. “There’s nothing I can do to help with releasing the ghosts. Would you mind if I were to do a little sightseeing?”
