He nodded once. “Yes.”
Still, I hesitated. “I could just lay down and you could crawl over me.”
“And if I do that, I might fall off of you. You’re not exactly a flat surface. This is the only way. Take my hands and swing me around to the other side of you. Okay?"
“You can’t just float over?” I hedged.
He huffed a breath, his annoyance coming through. “Tiger, floating the driver was hard enough. I can’t do myself.”
“Right, okay.”I could do this.“Can you make your hands not hot?”
He smiled, and the red glow faded, then vanished. He held up his now normal palms. “No more excuses. I’m ready.”
Pushing aside my nerves, I took his hands in mine, clutching them as tight as I could. Then, I swung him around myself. The Vulavi didn’t seem to notice—too sleepy to care about us, or they knew they couldn’t reach us. Either way, I was grateful I landed him safely on the other side of me.
Surge grinned at me. “I knew you could do it.”
“That makes one of us,” I said in a dry tone.
His hands glowed once more. “I’ll be right back.”
I watched him go, the red glow fading into nothing, making me realize that the cave had to be much deeper than it looked. While Surge was off to find the eggs, I pulled out the slide kit that I always kept stowed in my gauntlet driver behind the readoutscreen. It was slim enough that most guards never noticed it, but it had plenty of tools to repair most issues with a driver.
I wired the drivers together and tweaked them to send out a signal on the same frequency, effectively doubling their range. Sending a silent prayer to Kable, I also muttered, “You owe me, you fucker. You got me stuck in here, you can help get me out.”
Then I attempted to send out a message. Please let someone pick this up, please—
“Tiger,” a voice came through the static. “That you?”
The Vulavi started snapping all over again. Their sounds caused a reverberation through the drivers that made it both hard to hear them and hard to know if they heard me.
“Yes, come in!” I shouted over the beasts.
“Oh my god, Tiger!” Jenny’s voice broke through the comms.
My chest seemed to cave in on itself with relief. “Jen, where are—”
“It’s me too,” Jac said, his voice crackling as the connection cut in and out. “Send your coordinates—now!”
I quickly sent what he needed. “Did you get it?”
“Yeah, we’re—way!” Jac shouted, his words reaching me sporadically.
Jenny hollered. “I’m—sorry for—”
“Forget it, it’s nothing, I love you!”
“I love—”
The blast of a hand cannon went off wherever they were, echoing in the cave and setting off the snarling beasts below, but I didn’t care.
Panic shot through me and I shouted, “Jenny!”
But the connection was dead.
