“Who knows,” Jac said, looking out toward the woods for a moment before returning his gaze to me. “But what I do know is that I hope Sarah’s baby has Kapok’s ghost in it. The timing would work out just right, too. His death, the fetus’ conception…that could be him in her belly.”

I grinned at the thought. “It would be just like him to find his way back to us.”

“In other news, Treg finished his ship,” Jac said with a grin. “He’s dying to take a spin to Enelorrk. You know how he is about his cousins. But I had to send him to Orhon for some parts forSovereignfirst. If you want to take a look at Enelorrk, maybe you can tag along for the ride when he returns.”

“Why would I?”

Jac hesitated for a moment before continuing. “You said you were jealous of Sam, that you wanted a peaceful life. I thought you might want to take a look at some properties there. Take Malice and Jenny with you. The three of you can have a conversation about it all while you’re there. Unions on Enelorrk are lavish and fun. You could do worse.”

“Bad timing,” I said, rubbing my hand along the back of my neck. “Maybe once Justice has been dealt with, then we can talk about it, but not before then.” Not before Elizabeth was reunited safely with her sisters.

He patted my shoulder. “One big project at a time, then.”

I nodded. “Now that the Illiapol ghosts are here, and things have started to settle down, we can all focus on removing Justice. The sooner he’s gone, the sooner we can move forward and live our lives again.”

Just then, headlamps bounced from the other side of the manor.

“I guess Malice has returned,” Jac said as we headed in that direction. “I should say hi and be nice, I suppose, since he’s going to be my brother, once you three are united.”

I arched a brow. “Or you could just be nice because he’s a good person.”

“Yeah, you keep telling me that, but I haven’t decided yet,” he teased.

We walked around the building and toward the group. As we approached, Malice jumped out of the onworlder, his entire body vibrating with anger. He strode straight to Longshot. Grabbing him by the collar, Mal shoved him to the ground, his eyes wild and furious.

“What did you do?” he roared over him.

CHAPTER 34

Jenny

Iwas so taken aback by Mal’s behavior, it took me a few seconds to recover.

“What are you doing?” I shouted at Malice, who was straddling Longshot, his hands fisted in the collar of his shirt, his rage palpable. “Get off of him!”

But he ignored me to yell at Longshot. “Tell me!”

Longshot stared up at him in confusion, not doing anything to defend himself against Mal’s attack. “What are you asking about?”

“Buster Dembeck,” Mal growled, jumping to his feet.

Understanding flashed across Longshot’s face. “Let me explain,” he said, as he tried to stand.

But Mal put a foot on the center of his chest and kept him pinned to the ground. “Go ahead. Fucking explain!”

Jac and Tiger joined the group, and they didn’t speak. We were all too shocked by what was happening and Mal’sseemingly erratic behavior to say anything. All of us except Discord.

“Back off, Malice,” Discord demanded.

“Stay out of this!” Mal barked at her, then glared back down at his friend. “What in the fuck, Longshot?”

“This is undignified, Malice,” Longshot said calmly. “We are better than this. Kindly remove yourself from my chest and we will discuss this properly.”

I wasn’t sure if that was a veiled threat I heard in Longshot’s tone, but Mal moved his foot off him. Mal grabbed his good hand and yanked him to his feet.

“Talk.Now.”

“I had to give Justicesomeone. If I didn’t, he would have used—”
