“If they were in the blast, they’re gone.” The man said. “Y’all awakened?”
Zephyr didn’t reply.
My heart began to pound.
If they were in the blast, they’re gone.
Gone.
I sucked in a breath. I was terrified. We’d never been questioned alone like this. Mom or Ben or Levi was always there to protect us.
“I’ve got two…maybeawakened kids by the café.” The man said into a radio, then he raised his gun. “Come over here. Slowly.”
Zephyr, I spoke frantically into his mind, disappear.
No way, he replied.I can’t guarantee I’ll take you with me. I haven’t practiced enough.
I groaned softly, and the man went rigid, his finger flinching on the trigger of the gun.
“Did you fucking hear me? Come here. Now!”
Zephyr took a step back.
“Don’t do it, kid.” The man warned.
“Hey! What’s happening here? Those are my kids, put that fucking gun down!”
Zephyr and I deflated.
Levi was here. Levi was safe.
But Mom and Ben–
The man eyed Levi, then turned his attention back to me and Zephyr.
“Who is this?” he asked.
“Levi Aria,” I said easily, knowing I was the kid in question since Zephyr looked just like Levi. “One of my dads.”
The man lowered his gun after taking a peek at Levi’s ID, and then Levi pushed past him, running toward us. Zephyr and I squeezed together into Levi’s arms just like we were little kids again.
I immediately began to tremble. “Levi, they said…the blast,” I gasped for a breath.
Levi shushed me gently. “One problem at a time, baby girl. We gotta get out of here first.”
I nodded into his chest.
“Dad,” Zephyr started. “Dad, he’s–”
“He seems like a very nice gentlemen,” Levi said smoothly, raising his voice just enough for the man to hear.
“Are they awakened? What affinities do we have here?” The man asked.
“We’re just a family of air, sir.” Levi put on his island drawl. “The kids can barely create a breeze.”
“No, you’re lying.” The man shook his head. “We have a Sensor. They’re looking for a strong affinate in this area. So, I’ll ask again. What affinities do we have here?”
“You’re lookin’ for a kid?” Levi asked. “What’s the point of that?”
