I somehow already knew the answer to that was ano.
I arrived at the science building, where I sensed Aiden making his way down the stairs excitedly, ready to see me. The idea of someone being excited to see me was still…so weird.
I turned and looked into the shadows beyond the lamplight I stood under, and I sighed again.
Will you give me something? Your name? A sign you’re not a ghost?
Silence. Indecision. Apprehension.
“Hey, baby.” Aiden’s deep voice called to me from the stone corridor.
I waited for a second longer, then turned to face Aiden.
And then…just the softest brush of sensation ran down the side of my face. It was an awfully intimate caress, and…
Definitely not a ghost.
We madeour way across campus quickly, the impending winter air cold enough to hold snow if the clouds ever decided to organize. Aiden couldn’t keep his hands off of me as usual. I giggled at his antics, grateful for his heated skin, but my mind was still on the shadow.
And how it…touched me.
Lovingly.
I shivered as we stopped in front of my dormitory door.
“Hey, what’s this?” Aiden asked, lifting an ancient-looking book from the floor by the door.
I narrowed my eyes. “I don’t know. Maybe Willow dropped it?”
Aiden blew across the cover, sending dust into the air. I coughed, and Aiden laughed through an apology as I flicked my wrist to unlock the door.
Aiden was speaking behind me, probably reading the title of the book, but I couldn’t hear him.
I stood frozen.
Blood roared in my ears.
Fuck.Fuck.
I’d just unlocked the door with my affinity.
My heart pounded, but when I turned back to Aiden, his full attention was on the tome in his hand, with his eyebrows furrowed so close together it looked like he had a unibrow. He chewed his lip while scratching his head, and he looked so adorably confused I almost forgot I was freaking out.
“Baby, this thing is like…biblically ancient.” Aiden said, his warm eyes flashing up at me.
My heart eased slightly.
Aiden hadn’t noticed the door lock.
I pushed inside the room, pulling Aiden after me by his arm. He laughed as I took the huge book and tossed it onto my desk. I’d ask Willow if she knew what it was later.
Right now? I felt a little needy. And I wanted my Link.
“You okay, baby?” Aiden asked as I cuddled into his chest while he hugged me.
“Yeah,” I sighed. “I tried to talk to my shadow, but I think you scared it.”
Aiden snorted. “I don’t think I scare anyone, but okay. What did you say to him?”
