“How long have you known?” Mia whispered.
“Forever.” I replied easily.
“What else can you do? Is that…the only one?”
I pursed my lips and began shaking my head, then stopped.
“Are you sure you want to know?” I asked as I stood.
My two friends both nodded enthusiastically, even while they looked terrified, wiping away rogue tears.
“There’s a lot to explain. I need to change.” I said, my teeth chattering.
Willow nodded. “We’ll give you a minute.”
I peeled my soaking wet clothes off and changed quickly while Mia and Willow went to work making sure everything was straightened out where I’d placed it down.
It was.
But I wasn’t about to be cocky in front of them.
I pulled on my softest pair of leggings and one of Zephyr’s old sweatshirts I’d stolen from him. I pulled the collar to my nose, sighing as I caught the faintest bit of his scent.
I sat down on my hands and took a deep breath.
What do you want to know?I projected into both their minds.
Holy fuck, Skyes.Willow’s eyes widened, but Mia remained calm.
What do you want to know?I asked again. This is the only way we can discuss this. I don’t think my shadow is nearby, but I can’t chance anyone hearing us.
Mia nodded and pursed her lips. Willow was pale. Briefly, I considered that maybe I shouldn’t have done this without asking their permission. That was always something I’d disliked about my affinity. There was never any consent involved, and I swear I was the only one of my kind who’d ever cared.
How long have you known?Mia was the first to project a question out to me. Her voice came across soft and unsure in my mind. I reached out for her hand and Mia took it, proving she still trusted me not to hurt her, even if she was apprehensive.
My whole life.I replied. At least, that’s what I think. My parents always told me at first when my affinity manifested, it appeared like air, so they assumed that was it. But then I started doing other things I shouldn’t have been able to do, that didn’t involve air.
Willow and Mia shared a look, and Willow held out her hand to me. I took it easily, and the three of us sat in a triangle, all holding hands and watching each other’s expressions.
What else can you do?Willow asked.
Anything.I replied easily. Mia flinched.
Anything?Willow went pale. I only nodded.
Just to make sure we’re on the same page…Mia trailed off slowly before exhaling sharply. We all know what this means, right? Skye, you understand what you’re trusting us with?
I nodded solemnly.I understand completely, but…I trust y’all. I trust you’ll keep this secret.
Oh, Skyes. Of course we’ll keep it. I don’t want you to fucking die!Willow’s voice made me wince. She was just as clueless at screaming into someone’s mind as Zephyr was.
What about your brother?Mia asked, and Zephyr flashed through my mind.
Willow gasped slightly, then blushed. Mia shot her a wry grin. I bit back a laugh, realizing I’d just shown them an image of my brother in the café, smiling at me while covered in flour.
He’s handsome,Willow mumbled.
He knows,I replied with a grin, then took a deep breath.Do y’all remember the Gulf Capitol Massacre?
