My eyes prickled with tears as I looked up to meet Wyatt’s eyes.

They were cold, flat. Detached.

What. The.Fuck.

“Yes, Mr. Craig. That’s all.” I whispered.

It hit me all at once. He really…Wyatt really didn’t want me.

The pain in my chest seized at the realization, and I doubled over slightly as I went to stand.

Holy shit. Could you have a heart attack at twenty-four? I was pretty sure I was about to die.

Is this what he wanted? He wanted to scare me off, wanted me to run from him?

Wyatt flinched, moving to stand as if he were going to come to my aid, but I held up a quivering hand to stop him.

“Thank you for seeing me on such short notice. Sorry to bother you.” I whispered. I felt like if I tried to speak at full volume, my voice would crack.

And then, like I’d been doing a lot recently, I turned and fucking ran.

Chapter 26

Wyatt

The doorto my office slammed as Skye ran for her fucking life, and I dropped my face to my hands, fighting back tears.

How had I fucked that up so badly?

The office descended into darkness with the sound of breaking glass. I lifted my face, blinded slightly by the bright laptop screen on my desk.

Rafe emerged from the shadows like a wraith, his blank expression barely hiding his rage, which was…confusing?

“What. The fuck. Wasthat?” he demanded.

I bristled. “Fuck, Rafe. You’re replacing that lightbulb.” I snapped, carefully avoiding his question.

Rafe laid both of his palms flat on my desk and leaned forward with a menace I’d never seen directed at me before. In all the years we’d been friends, I’d definitely seen him threatening others, but never me.

“How do you know her?” he asked quietly.

What?

“Skye? She’s a student–”

“Bullshit,” he snapped. “You were about to fuck her against yourdoor. Infullview of the hallway, I might add. You do that with all yourstudents?”

I gritted my teeth. “You know I don’t.”

“How do you know her?” Rafe demanded again, and I relented. There was no lying to him.

“I met her over the summer at the café she works in. I was going to come back and see her when her shift was done, since her boss was a dick, but I was called away due to that elemental weather event. She used an unregistered water affinity to save the café, and I was the closest academy representative so I went back to speak with her.”

My heart sank in my chest at how Rafe’s expression changed from one of thinly veiled rage to that of resignation.

“And?” Rafe prompted.

“Andwhat, dick?”
