I glanced over my shoulder, and my eyes widened in horror, my breath catching in my throat.
Wyatt hadn’t locked the door.
I had.
The way he stood, holding the knob with one hand, the other trembling over the lock told me heknewhe hadn’t locked the door.
I whipped back around to face away from him while he unlocked and opened the door. My heart pounded. Blood roared in my ears. I gasped for a breath.
Holy shit. How had I fucked up that badly?
“Ms. Iykos. What can I do for you?” Wyatt asked, his tone sounding a little pissed.
“Sorry, Mr. Craig, I…uh…”
“Ms. Iykos,” Wyatt prompted in a clipped tone.
“I’m sorry, I’m so sorry Skye,” she said, and I hunched my shoulders slightly, hating that she had to mention me. “I forgot to give you this file from Professor Aspen.”
“Thank you, Ms. Iykos. In the future, please refrain from storming into one of my counseling sessions. Ms. Aria deserves the same privacy she gave you when your session ran late.”
I snorted, but quickly sniffled as if I were crying again.
Holy shit. Why was stern Wyatt kinda…
The door slammed shut mid-profuse apology from Lana.
But as I leaned back against the back of the couch, expecting Wyatt tofucking finish what he started, he moved behind his desk, sitting down slowly and running his hands through his hair before taking a deep breath.
My heart pounded, and the ache in my chest grew. I rubbed at it subconsciously as Wyatt lifted his head to meet my gaze. His eyes caught on how I rubbed my chest, but he didn’t speak.
“Wyatt?” I whispered.
“What brings you in today, Ms. Aria?” Wyatt asked, his tone flat and detached.
My heart shattered in my chest.
“I…”
We stared at each other for several seconds.
Tears threatened to well, but I squeezed my eyes shut and willed myself to relax.
“I came to, uh…” I took a deep breath, trying hard to keep my tone from trembling. “I came to ask about my Link-testing. Eleanor told me there had been an issue. Headmaster Earl told me it was of great importance.” My voice devolved into a raspy whisper.
Wyatt stiffened but then exhaled slowly.
“Yes, I saw there had been an issue. Headmaster Earl mentioned it to you? What was the context of that conversation?”
I cleared my throat before speaking. “I was being spoken to about an incident I’d had with another student during Health class.”
Wyatt was silent, his jaw clenching as he seemed to wait for me to continue. I didn’t. Maybe I would have, had things gone differently today, but now? I’d never tell this man anything again.
“Well, if that’s all, then when you have time, you can make your way to the Health Center and have your blood redrawn and retested. It’s quite common, there’s nothing to fear.”
“Okay.” I rasped.
“Is that all, Ms. Aria?” Wyatt asked.
