“Skyes,” he said. “Don’t worry about Serena. She’s out.”
Wyatt’s expression hardened as he caught sight of Zephyr, his eyes narrowed slightly at how my brother playfully pulled at my arm.
“Oh, joy.” I muttered.
“What’s with that face? You want me on my knees?” Zephyr asked, shaking me back and forth playfully. I swatted him away and he laughed before looking to Wyatt, realizing we were being watched. “Hey man, you been helped?” Zephyr asked.
“Yep.” Wyatt clipped.
“Lyla doing okay, then?” Zephyr asked, turning his attention back to me.
“Yep. She’s got it. Just needed a little help.”
“Cool, cool. Can we get you anything else?” Zephyr asked, once again glancing at Wyatt, then me, then suddenly tensing when he realized this man was apparently here to stare at me.
Wyatt shook his head before turning and walking away, going to stand by the takeout end of the counter. His whole demeanor had shifted the moment Zephyr showed up, and that was…interesting, to say the least.
“Holy shit,” Zephyr whispered. “That dude is…”
I snorted. “Stop right there, please.”
“Did I interrupt y’all?” Zephyr asked, completely unapologetic like he hadn’t just been trying to tell me to get laid. He raised his eyebrows up and down suggestively.
I narrowed my eyes at him before going to help Lyla, since she was fucking up both of Wyatt’s drinks. Zephyr snickered as I pulled away.
“I got this, Ly.” I said, and I swear she deflated like a balloon before scrambling away.
I carefully put Wyatt’s drinks together, making the frozen caramel just how I liked it, with extra caramel drizzled inside the cup and on top.
Taking a deep breath, I turned to the takeout counter to deliver the drinks.
Wyatt was sitting alone by the window, watching the cold rain outside. As if he could feel me coming, his eyes snapped to mine, then drifted down lower to check me out again.
I’d never had a man this hot check me out so many times. I was starting to feel a little uncomfortable.
What was he even looking at?I wasn’t blind, I knew I wasn’t ugly. I knew my curves were in the right places. But I was a sweaty mess from the morning rush, my eyes were puffy and red from crying, my hair was in a lop-sided ponytail I didn’t have the energy to fix, and my unflattering apron was covered in flour and something sticky.
Men are weird.
I placed the two drinks down on the table before turning to leave, but Wyatt stopped me with a gentle touch to my forearm.
“Will your boss let you take a break?” he asked, his eyes darting toward Zephyr at the counter.
“Sure.” I said lightly, eyeing how he hadn’t removed his hand from me, yet. Wyatt dropped his hand like I’d burned him, then gestured for me to sit across from him, so I did. He took the hot coffee then pushed the frozen caramel toward me.
I almost laughed. “You got this for me?”
Wyatt nodded.
“Why?”
“I was hoping you’d take a break and could come sit with me.” he replied, his tone implying I was stupid for not realizing his intention.
“You don’t even know my name.” I said, taking a slurp from the immaculate frozen caramel I’d made. I regretted that Wyatt wouldn’t be able to taste my skills.
“Skye?” Wyatt raised a dark brow. “Your…bosssaid your name earlier.”
I snorted at his tone. It wasn’t the first time someone had assumed Zephyr and I weren’t related. Family Chains of only two people simply didn’t exist. It was more than normal for siblings to have different parents within a Chain, and yet, people saw siblings with different skin tones and assumed there was no relation at all.
