“That girl? She’s special. She needs to be protected, and I can’t do that if I remember her, remember what I saw in her.” Vince explained. “I’ve been expecting a visit from your father any day now. Surprised it’s you who’s here instead.”

I stared at him with raised brows.

“Well, this isn’t going how I thought.” I almost pouted. Not that Ienjoyedbeating up old men, but…maybe I’d been looking forward to beatingsomething.

“Can you wipe my memory or not?” Vince asked, his tone hard.

I could, but I wasn’t ready to tell him that, yet. Craig would blow a fuse just knowing I’d snooped on his computer again. If I suddenly ordered him to scramble someone’s mind, he’dfreak. Not to mention Vince would be out of commission for…at his age?...severaldays after a scramble. It was the one thing Craig hadn’t managed to perfect about his affinity, and it agitated him endlessly.

“Tell me what I want to know.”

“There’s nothing for me to tell you,” he replied smoothly.

I exhaled slowly.

“That your final answer?” I asked.

“That’s all you’re getting from me until you can guarantee what I’ve asked for,” he replied.

I nodded, pulling out my smartphone and shooting off a few messages. “I know she’s at least telepathic, she’s powerful enough to keep me out.”

Vince chuckled. “She’s much stronger than that, princeling.” I bristled again. “I’m sure you know about her other affinities, then? Just need me to confirm?”

Affinities…plural?

“Vince, something tells me this isn’t something we should say out loud,” I said casually.

“Then we’ll be playing a guessing game, instead.” Vince said grimly. “I’ll never let you in my mind. ‘Specially since I know what you can do.”

I grinned at the old man. Annoying, but smart. I glanced down at my phone as it vibrated with an incoming text from my angry friend.

WYATT

You fucking idiot. I’m on my way.

Chapter 16

Skye

I was backin my most hated class. I would call it my least favorite, but I didn’t even have afavoriteclass. I’d hated school when I was a kid, and I hated it even more now that I was an adult.

I stood toward the back of the group, as far from Landon as possible, rubbing my arms to warm them up. It was freezing outside, and my sweatshirt did nothing to warm me. I looked around at the other students before glancing at Coach, who stood at the front of the gym, speaking with Landon.

Landon was actually grinning, and he didn’t look like a total dickhead. Weird.

Strong, warm arms suddenly banded around my chest, and I tensed so hard I swear one of my vertebrae popped.

“Hi,” Aiden whispered, his face so close to mine that his lips brushed against my ear.

I shook him off while I shivered, shooting him a glare that had him grinning like a little kid.

“What do you want?” I snarked.

“Good morning,” Aiden beamed.

I shook my head with a grin. We’d been playing this game for the last week or two, where I pretended he annoyed me and he…reveled in annoying me. We’d gone on two more dates since the first, and each time our goodbye kisses grew more and more needy and desperate. As much as I wanted to let Aiden up into my room to pound me into oblivion, something was still holding me back.

Maybe it was the fact that some shadow being was following me and watching all these encounters.
