“Who, baby?” I asked, my arms growing hotter at the looming threat. As usual, it didn’t bother Skye.

“Pilgrims,” she whispered. “Block the door.”

“Oh, fuck.” Rafe muttered.

“What?” I said. “What does that mean?” But Rafe was already moving.

“Willow, move.” Rafe ordered. Willow moved just as men’s voices shouted from the hall.

Skye gasped, throwing out her hand and sending Willow, Mia, and Dani all further into the room. I stood, planting myself in front of Skye as Rafe sent up a wall of shadows to block the doorway, just as a man came into view.

He was covered head to toe in tactical black, the only color on him was a deep red symbol on his chest.

“We gotta go,” Rafe said as gunfire erupted on the other side of the shadows.

Willow screamed as Mia turned toward the huge hole where the window had been. She climbed over one of the broken beds and glanced outside.

“There’s more of them out there,” Mia said.

“Who did that?” Willow cried, pointing toward a fire across the quad. I cringed. It was the same copse of trees I’d worried Landon would set on fire right before the fight.

The shadows blocking the doorway rippled, easily holding back the gunfire while Rafe watched Skye.

“I’ll let y’all down,” Skye said, her voice shaky. “Then we can get out.”

“No fucking way,” Rafe said at the same moment I opened my ownmouth to object. “Anyone sees your affinity and you’re dead. They won’t give a shit about the terrorists.”

“You have a better idea, stalker boy?” Skye growled.

Rafe pursed his lips. “I can shadow-walk all of us out of here.”

Skye bit her lip. “Oh. Right.”

“Let’s go.” Willow said as she uncovered a chest at the foot of her bed. She pulled out a pair of sneakers while Skye pulled on her boots. I found my shoes somewhere near the shadow door, and then we pulled together in the center of the room. Dani ran her hands over my shoulders, then Skye’s, then nodded, satisfied we weren’t hurt.

“I can get us out of here, or I can take us down to the quad.” Rafe said.

“I need to get to the clinic. People will be hurt.” Dani said quickly. Willow frowned.

“Take me to the quad,” Skye said, her voice shaking slightly.

Rafe sighed slightly. “Skye,” he started.

“No,” she cut him off. “Take me to the quad. We both know I can help.”

Rafe clenched his jaw, but didn’t disagree. His eyes jumped to me next. “I’m with her,” I said plainly. He looked to Willow and Mia.

“I’m staying with Skye,” Willow said. Mia nodded in agreement.

“Alright. I’ll get us to the quad, then take Dani to the clinic, then meet back at the quad.” Rafe said.

Skye took my hand and pulled me closer before she gripped Rafe’s jacket. “Let’s go.”

Chapter 53

Skye

As soon asRafe disappeared from view, Aiden took my hand, pulling me out of the open and toward an alcove.
