I almost laughed. I’d been bringing her books on healing affinities. She had to know a Healer.

“Skye? Do you know a Healer?” Mia asked. Her sharp eyes had been tracking Skye’s every movement since she’d pulled the drugs out of Aiden, like she was expecting her to drop dead from Exhaust any minute.

“Can’t we just take him to the Health clinic? They don’t need to know what happened beforehand, right?” Willow suggested. “Skye, you like that one nurse, right? What was her name?”

Skye gasped, causing Aiden to jolt slightly. She soothed him quickly before running a hand through her hair.

“Dani,” she murmured.

“Can we really trust her?” Mia asked.

Skye chewed her lip, shooting me a quick look, then locking eyes with me. She seemed flustered by my constant attention, but she’d have to get used to it. I was going to watch her for the rest of our lives, regardless of whether or not she chose to accept me into the Chain.

Although, I knew she would. She wouldn’t be able to resist me, especially not after I got my hands on Lucille Brandt for her…and for Aiden. The moment Skye accepted him, Aiden had become an official member of this family Chain, and unlike my father and grandfather before me, I didn’t fuck around when it came to family.

“Skye,” I prompted when she still hadn’t spoken again. “Do you trust her? Dani?”

“With my life,” she replied without hesitation.

“I’ll find her,” I swore, then blurred into the shadows and disappeared.

Chapter 51

Skye

I’d just gottenAiden out of the shower and helped him brush his teeth when Willow and Mia got back to the dorm with a change of clothes for him. They’d cleaned up his dorm as best as possible and Mia had threatened his roommate into leaving for the night so he wouldn’t be there if Lucille returned. Rafe hadn’t come back, but I wasn’t exactly worrying about him. My priority was Aiden.

I still hadn’t slowed down long enough to consider how Aiden was feeling after what’d happened. His mother tried to kill him. She wasn’t just a bitch anymore, she was…fucking evil.

My affinity had been twisting through my veins, causing my palms to itch every time I thought of her. As soon as Aiden was feeling better, I was going to ask him how he wanted to deal with her.

I really, reallyhoped his answer was murder.

I helped Aiden into his clean clothes while Willow and Mia moved the furniture in the dorm back into place, then I settled Aiden onto the bed. Willow brushed up against my mind as I turned, and I opened up to her and Mia while she changed the bag in our small waste basket.

What’s the plan?Willow asked.

I’ll go find Dani,I said.Rafe obviously isn’t finding her.

That’ll take forever, Skye. It could be hours before you find her, especially if you end up driving all over the place.

I pursed my lips. I wouldn’t need to drive anywhere. Hours of searching would take me about twenty minutes, but my two friends didn’t know that yet. Now wasn’t the time to explain, either.

Then, as if he’d been summoned, Rafe stepped out of a shadow near the bathroom with a blood-curdling scream. And I mean a full blown, horror movie, bloody-murderscream.

Mia and Willow gasped, and Aiden jolted up in bed. I moved in front of him in a protective stance without hesitation, but my affinity didn’t react. For the first time in what seemed like hours, my hands didn’t itch at all.

“Let me go!” A woman’s voice shrieked.

“No one’s touching you,” Rafe replied dryly.

My eyes widened so far, I thought they’d fall out of my skull.

“Dani!?” I cried, moving toward her quickly.

“Skye?!” Dani wailed. She was lying on the carpet, completely unharmed, partially obscured by some shadows that dissipated as I drew closer. Her eyes were wild, darting around the room in search of an escape.

“What did you do?” I hissed at Rafe.
