I needed Zephyr, but I couldn’t risk reaching out to him while Wyatt was this close to me. He’d know.
“I’m not going to tell anyone, I swear. What are you so scared of? Sharing thoughts is not as uncommon as you think it is.”
I continued shaking my head, my head spinning.
I was a nobody.
Even if the problem was as simple as telepathy, I would never be allowed to keep it.
There were rumors, here in the islands. Rumors of government weapons. Affinates with an affinity forabsorbing affinities. Sure, some would write it off as a crazy conspiracy, but…
I didn’t realize I had crumpled onto the filthy concrete until Wyatt was right in front of me, frantically searching my face for a sign of what was wrong with me.
I hadn’t had a panic attack in years. I always forgot how much they hurt.
I gasped for air. My heart pounded painfully. My vision blurred.
My lungs were burning, but I couldn’t force myself to take in oxygen, especially not when someone like Wyatt was so close by and would definitely notice.
And then…it all stopped.
And Wyatt…was kissing me.
Wyatt was kissing me.
He was still so tall on his knees in front of me, but he pulled me to his chest, one of his hands pressing against my ribs while the other snaked its way into my hair.
I sucked in a breath, then whimpered, gripping his shirt tighter as a strange feeling washed through me.
Kissing Wyatt felt sogood. I instantly relaxed, practically forgetting everything that had just happened.
Wyatt groaned softly before his tongue prodded against my lips, silently asking me to open for him. I eagerly welcomed his tongue into my mouth, using my own to explore him right back.
My earlier panic was completely forgotten as I moaned into the kiss, snaking my hands up his hard chest to wrap around his neck. Just as I pulled him tighter to me, he pulled back abruptly, shattering the moment and leaving me cold. I opened my eyes just in time to see Wyatt stumbling away from me.
“An escort will pick you up within the hour and take you to the academy,” Wyatt choked out, and then he was gone.
And I was alone in the alley, panting hard and feeling a sudden pain in my chest.
What the fuck just happened?
Chapter 5
Skye
“Welcome.”
An older man greeted me. His eyes were an unusual cornflower blue, and his hair was so white it was almost glowing. He was ancient…and yet…not.
I gave him an awkward smile in response, the paper under me crinkling as I shifted my weight.
My face hurt. My eyes were puffy and red. My nose was puffy and red. My cheeks were just red.
I’d yet to sleep since the storm. I was thankful for my numb nose, keeping me from being able to smell the sterile, antiseptic smell I’d expected from being inside this pseudo-medical office.
“Name’s Vince,” he said. “Been working here a long time. How old are you?”
“Twenty-four.” I muttered.
