Tears.

I was crying.

Skye.

Fucking Skye would think I did this on purpose.

She would be so, so disappointed in me.

No…she’d forgive me. Because she was kind.

I dragged my body across the floor a few inches and then I crumbled.

There was nothing I could do.

I was trapped.

I would die here.

So I thought of her. I thought of Skye, the only woman who truly loved me. She hadn’t said it to me yet, but I knew. I could feel it. She was the only woman willing to forgive me for my mistakes, even when they hurt her.

I could see it in the way she looked at me. The way she smiled at me. How she stood between me and a threat, even if she was small enough that I saw clear over her head. The way she touched me, the way she kissed me. She loved me. Shehadto.

My chest ached.

I was dying.

I only hoped Skye wouldn’t be disappointed in me when she found out.

Chapter 48

Rafe

I pulledat the scratchy collar of my stupid royal coat, sending Raaz a glare. He’d appeared at my side the moment I’d walked into yet another meeting-turned-gala, and curtly walked me back to my wing of the Palace where I was forced to change out of my jeans and long sleeve t-shirt into something more appropriate.

Now, we were practically attached at the hip while he followed me all over the party, never once parting from me, even as I’d tried slipping into the men’s room.

“Shouldn’t you be with the Crown Princess?” I muttered into my glass ofwater. No champagne for the princeling, tonight.

“Her Royal Highness is with her Link Hugo tonight, my prince.” Raaz said, not even batting an eye.

I was pretty sure this fucker was into my mom, and yet he didn’t even pull a face when telling me she was with one of her actual lovers.

Shit just kept getting weirder and weirder.

I blew out a breath, longingly eyeing a server carrying a tray of champagne flutes as he passed me.

“And where is my father, I wonder?” I said, making eye contact with Harper Brandt across the ballroom. She wore a dress with way too much chiffon, making her appear even shorter andcurvier than she already was. I gave her a sinister smile in greeting and she gulped, then dipped her head and scurried out of view.

“Alexander is with a business associate,” Raaz replied, his eyes tracking the path Harper took through the crowd as she ran for her life. “That was an interesting reaction.”

“I enjoy frightening her.” I explained. “Any idea why I was dragged here, Razzy?”

“I imagine you’ll be meeting Alexander’s associate,” he answered, ignoring my nickname.

“And how exactly is that going to go?” I hedged, looking for any sign of emotion on his face. His dark brows remained drawn, his eyes hooded slightly with the type of boredom I dreamed to convey.

This guy rubbed me the wrong way. He was so annoying yet…kinda cool?
