“Hey, you two.” Seward reappeared at our side. “I know this isn’t a good time. A representative from the nearest academy is here, and he would like to speak to you as soon as possible.”
Zephyr let me lean away from him for just a moment before he jerked me back into his chest. My vision took a moment to focus while Zephyr swore above me.
“Are you fucking serious?”
“Sir, you do not need to curse. I know tensions are high, but please remain pleasant.” Seward clipped.
I blinked a few times, and then my heart dropped.
The man standing beside her, wearing a similar gym-bro getup like the first time I’d seen him yesterday, was…
“Wyatt?” I croaked.
Chapter 4
Skye
“What are you doing here?”I whispered. Zephyr squeezed me tighter to his chest like Wyatt was about to attack us.
Wyatt, to his credit, didn’t look happy about what was happening. Dare I say he even appeared a bit remorseful? He ran his hand up and down the back of his neck nervously, offering me a weak smile before I blinked out more tears.
This is no coincidence,Zephyr’s voice hissed at me.That fucker looks at you like he wants to make a meal out of you, fucking stands you up, then magically shows back up after this freak storm? A storm they said wasn’t natural?
I breathed out slowly, dropping my gaze from Wyatt’s in shame.
My brother was right.
I’m so fucking stupid,I said.
How’d he even peg you? Is he a telepath?
You think he’d have told me that?!I hissed back.
Of course not, Skye. I’m sorry.Zephyr’s apology had me feeling like a bitch.
I’m sorry,I replied in a small voice.
Zephyr squeezed me gently in acknowledgement.
Meanwhile, Wyatt was staring at us with some emotion I couldn’t name. His hazel eyes washed over me, as if assessing me for injuries.
That would be madness, of course. Why the hell would he care if I was hurt?
“I’ll need to speak to her alone.” Wyatt said, and my gaze snapped back up to his.
“No,” Zephyr said.
Wyatt rolled his eyes, then turned on his heel and walked right out the door.
“Not your choice, buddy.” Seward replied with a sigh. “Come on, honey, get this over with so we can all go home.”
I narrowed my eyes at her back and with a final glance at my brother, I followed Seward as she took me toward the door. The predatory part of my brain couldn’t help but notice how Seward had a slight limp in her right leg. I could take her easily if necessary. She’d barely been able to conjure up that glass of water earlier, too.
I chuckled, remembering her shaky hands.
“What was that, honey?” Seward asked.
I cleared my throat. “Nothing,” I muttered, shivering as we stepped outside and I found myself holding Wyatt’s undivided attention.
