Rafe nodded, ignoring my growing alarm. “You seen him? The Crusader?”
“I didn’t, but my cousin did, in the Polar Circle. He cured a woman of cancer.Cancer. Pulled it right out of her. She was better in just a few days.”
“Wow,” Rafe commented, shooting me a look.
“You guys believers?” The man asked, suddenly eyeing me and Rafe like maybe he’d given us too much info.
“Just curious,” I replied. “You hear a lot of things, you know? We just wanted to see for ourselves.”
“Smart men. I’m sorry you have to wear those fucking masks, though. No one deserves to be persecuted for their beliefs, curious or not.” The man said.
He had a point, but also…
He’s weak as fuck, his whole brain is just an echo chamber of propaganda,Rafe told me. I nodded absently as I glanced around us.
“So the Crusader is just coming here to heal some people and start shit with the royals?” I asked.
Rafe stiffened ever-so-slightly.
“Nah, he’s looking for something. Been searching for decades, they say. That’s why he’s been all over the world. Only people really close know what’s up. Some of the higher ups are probably here. You guys seem like you’re really interested in the cause. Wanna meet someone?”
“Absolutely,” Rafe said before I could object.
I nodded stiffly. “Sure, why not?”
The man jerked his chin for us to follow him. After weaving around a few people holding posters, he turned back and extended his hand to Rafe. “I’m Reggie.”
“Nice to meet you, Reggie. Thanks for helping us out.”
“You got it. Couple of young guys interested in the cause is just what we need.”
Rafe grunted in reply, then his steps faltered, and he almost stumbled.
For some fucking reason, my hand fell to his waist to steady him. We paused for a moment, both staring at each other in horror before Rafe shuddered and shoved me away. I couldn’t help but snort.
Sorry, bro,I thought sarcastically.
Rafe chuckled into my mind.Don’t worry about it, we have bigger issues at hand. This fucker is taking us to Lucille.
Nowmysteps faltered, and Rafe shot me a raised brow.
Lucille Brandt?I hissed back.
Rafe’s lips pursed. You’re gonna have to talk, buddy. I just saw her at that gala and I was a real dick. She’ll recognize my voice.
I groaned out loud.
Rafe had told me all about the gala. He’d been so pissed, I thought he’d punch through my drywall. Thankfully, he hadn’t, but he did end up punching it over my startling Skye a few days later. Somehow, he never seemed to punch a hole through his own fucking wall.
At least it’s not one of our parents,I offered up conversationally.
Rafe snorted. It could never be mine. I expected Dick to come out and meet us, but not Lucille. This isn’t good, Wyatt. Skye shouldn’t have in-laws involved in a fucking cult of psychos.
I ground my teeth, then paused for a moment as we made our way out of the crowd and toward some open tents that were set up near the park.
Therewasa strong telepath nearby. A really strong one. I could feel it under my skin, like an itch that wouldn’t go away.
There’s a telepath here,I told Rafe a little breathlessly.
