And she did just that. Right in the center of a busy holiday parade site. Twice. Dozens of people were dead. Two of which had seemingly vanished without a trace.
I considered her to be lower than scum.
Is the storm in the islands related to this?I asked, Rafe shrugging as he’d already followed my thoughts.
No idea. But that’s a second connection to Skye and that massacre.
I only blinked at him. I’d forgotten the first connection to Skye and the massacre – Vince, the Sensor who lied about Skye’s affinities, had been present that day, too. He’d lost his wife and son.
Did the files say anything else?I asked.
Nothing about Wilson being insane,Rafe sighed.I know that’s your favorite theory.
I scowled at him. I didn’t want to believe people were evil. I’d long hoped that Wilson’s inexplicable actions could be explained away by insanity, maybe brought on by a strong affinity for telepathy. But she’d never attended any of the academies and had only ever shown one awakened affinity – the ability to harness the weather.
I wonder how Dick feels about this,Rafe commented next.
I slumped back in my chair.
The only reason I knew so much about Regina Wilson was because my father was her defense attorney for the massacre trial.
He’d lost the case so badly, I’d worried Willow and Lauren might be in danger from his violent backlash. The jury only deliberated for twenty minutes. No one had even left the justice building yet.
I’m not going to ask him,I said defensively, though I knew my friend would never ask me to willingly speak to my father about anything.
Rafe nodded, not surprised by my answer. The storms are drawing closer. The connection between Skye and the massacre can’t be ignored.
You think she had something to do with it? She would have been what, twelve?
Of course I don’t think she was involved,Rafe growled and I gulped.Something is going on here. If I didn’t know any better, I’d think those storms were moving closer to the academy.
I gulped again. “Keep an eye on her.” I said out loud.
Rafe smiled slowly at me, though it only appeared like he was baring his teeth.
“Always,” he replied, then groaned as his phone buzzed again.
“You gonna get that?” I asked.
Rafe sighed deeply, his face illuminated from the tiny screen.
“Hello?” he answered, then squeezed his eyes shut as Alexander’s tiny, angry voice squeaked through his phone speaker.
“I’m not dressed for anything fancy,” Rafe drawled, and my spinetingled. “I’m with Wyatt.” Rafe was constantly pushing his father’s buttons for fun, especially in front of me. Rafe had protected me from all manner of things throughout our lives, but I was the one who’d protected him from his father. Every once in a while, Alexander needed reminding of that.
Alexander’s angry voice squeaked again, quieter this time, then Rafe’s phone beeped as the call ended, and Rafe let out a hollow laugh.
“Well, I’ll follow our sweet Skye in a few hours. Looks like I’m needed at some fucking meeting.”
“As the prince or as your father’s son?” I asked, fighting a smirk.
Rafe shot me a slow, dangerous smile. “He didn’t specify,” was all he said before he disappeared.
Chapter 36
Rafe
I heldin my eye roll at the person I’d just met. Alejandro had been parading me around this party –yeah,he’d lied when he told me it was a meeting, then got angry at me when I showed up not in my royal garb– for over an hour now.
