Our pleasure finally waned, the never-ending orgasm ending and leaving us in a pile of sweaty limbs. We were both panting heavily, Skye’s breasts brushing against my chest in a way that was oddly tantalizing. Looking down at her face, flushed and lined with beads of sweat, a rush of emotion welled up inside me. I squeezed my eyes shut just as tears rolled down my cheeks.
“Angel,” Skye whispered, her voice sounding raw. She clasped her hands behind my neck and held me tight, pulling my face down to press my cheek against hers. I felt her tears sliding down her face onto mine. “I feel it, too.”
This was the most amazing thing I’d ever felt. Did my mother feelthis? Did any of her Links feel this sense ofcompletenessfrom her? I fucking doubted it.
Everything important to me had fizzled out in an instant. Everyfaceless hope and dream I’d ever had zeroed down into the shape of one beautiful woman with dark hair and silver eyes.
“I love you, Skye.” I breathed into her neck. “You’ve just given me the greatest gift of my life. I’m gonna make you so happy.”
Chapter 34
Skye
“Hey, Skye.”Landon’s deep voice greeted me the moment I stepped out of the dormitory.
I stifled a grimace. “Hi, Landon. What’s…up?”
“Not much,” he replied pleasantly, falling into step beside me. His hands were shoved in his jean pockets, the sweatshirt he wore appeared a size too small, his biceps perilously stretching the fabric.
“Well…great.” I said back, confused. My shadow nudged me and I resisted the urge to hiss like a cat. My shadow post-NudgeGatewas quite a bit more expressive, and I wasn’t sure if I liked it or not, though I now found myself missing the presence when it was gone for too long.
“Have you started your final essay forHistory of Affinities? Lana told me like, no one has done it yet. I was looking through the library last night to see which topic had the most sources, and there was no information. So frustrating, you know? It was the same shit when I took the class, too.”
I stared at him like he’d grown a second head.
Because in what fucking world was Landon Iykos –the man who’d growled at me, and scowled at me, and grabbed me to do who-knows-what with me– speaking to me like nothing was wrong?
I’d thought his slamming Anton and then offering me notes was a one off, but clearly I’d been wrong.
He continued walking next to me, his expression pleasant. Even my shadow was confused as it followed me.
“Yeah, I haven’t uh…I haven’t looked into it, yet.”
“Well, when you pick a topic, let me know, I’ll send you some sources. It’ll make your life way easier. I might even get Lana to hand over the grading chart.” He sped up his pace just slightly to pull open one of the heavy dining hall doors ahead of us.
I blinked at him, and he raised his eyebrows slightly, gesturing with his hand for me to pass through the doors.
I did so rigidly.
Landon followed me through the food line, jokingly commenting on my choice in plain cheese pizza, then he took my tray as I swiped my ID card. I had no choice but to follow him to my usual table. He placed my tray down in front of my usual seat, and I slowly lowered myself down, still confused as fuck.
Landon ate his hamburger in silence, checking his phone every once in a while.
I only stared.
“Something wrong?” Landon asked, startling me. I coughed at the same moment I’d taken a sip of juice, which had me sputtering for a second before I could breathe again.
“I’m confused.” I wheezed. “I know you apologized but…I don’t know, Landon. This is a complete one-eighty. You were a huge dick to me, and to Aiden.”
Landon sighed. “I know. I’m really sorry. I think you’re really cool, Skye. And I’m apologizing to Aiden as soon as you let me.”
I stiffened. “Landon, I, uh…look–”
“Wait, you don’t think I’m hitting on you, do you?” Landon looked horrified for a moment, then his expression changed to something thoughtful. “I mean, do you want me to be hitting on you?”
A laugh burst out of me before I realized how fucking rude it made me look. “No, I’m sorry. I’m just not used to…uh…”
“People fucking up and trying to be different? People trying to be your friend?”
