“And who is this pretty little thing?” she asked, nodding at me.

“I’m Emmy,” I answered. The next words flowed off my lips easily, tasting sweet and right. “Carter’s girl.”

41. NO MORE HOURS

October 28

Day Sixty-Two

Groaning, I untangled myself from the warmth of Carter and the comfiness of the bed. My bladder had yelled until I moved. According to the clock, it was eight thirty. I grabbed Carter’s discarded shirt off the floor before heading to the bathroom. I did my business and came back out. Carter looked so peaceful. I could tell I was more than likely not going back to sleep, deciding instead to work out some parts of a new song I’d been thinking up. I was just about to sit when I heard soft scratches at the door. I went over and let Mac in, telling him not to wake his dad as the two of us crept inside. We settled back into the bed, thankfully not disturbing Carter. Baby dog quickly fell asleep while I wrote down the words that were starting to flow through my mind.

Eyes like whiskey.—> Untamed fire?

Intoxication.—> Drinking you in.

Love. Love?

Love.

“You ain’t s’pose to be up here,” Carter’s raspy voice spoke, jolting me from my thoughts. I slammed my book shut, putting it on the table beside. I wasn’t sure what he meant until he sleepily snapped his fingers and said, “Mac, Down.” I sat up, snapping my own fingers. Mac was keeping my feet warm.

“Stay,” I countered.

“This again?” Carter grumbled. “You realize this ismyhouse, myrules, right?”

“Yeah, but this ismybed.”

“And I have no problem tying you back up toyourbed if you don’t straighten up.”

Before we were even done with dinner last night, I had gotten myself all flustered, wanting to be tied up by Carter again. So much so that the moment we got in the truck, I was unbuttoning his pants, giving him road head the whole way home. Since my bed was the only one with posts—and also because the ropes were still tied to them—we headed to my room, where we spent the rest of the night. I realized, too, that it was the first time we had slept overnight in there together.

“You got ‘til I get back from pissin’,” Carter grumbled, getting out of bed. I smiled, watching as his stillverynaked ass walked away. I patted Mac, telling him what a good boy he was before leaning back against the headboard. Mac had just settled back down when his mean father came back in and huffed.

“Seriously? Mac, get your ass down,” Carter commanded, getting back into bed.

“Mac, baby, stay.”

Mac looked between us, confused, just like the last time.

“I’m not dealin’ with your bratty ass today, Emogen.”

“Whatever do you mean?” He eyed me for a moment, sighing before looking back at his four-legged companion.

“Make a choice, Mac. Listen to the one that saved you and gave you a roof over your spoiled ass, or the one who spoils you and can’t even throw your ball as far as I can,” Carter said, smiling.

“Hey, now. That’s not fair.”

“Totally is.”

“Fine. Mac, stay with the one who lets you on the bed and gives you all the lovings and treats. Oh,andthe best snuggles,” I countered.

“Mac, down,” Carter said, snapping and pointing to the floor.

“Mac, stay.”

Mac looked between us once more, both of us holding our breath. And then he walked up to me. He faced Carter before laying in between us, pushing his owner away. I stifled a laugh as Mac put his head down with a small sigh.

“I win again!” I giggled as Carter huffed, “Traitor. All I’ve done for you, you ungrateful little shit.”
