Finally, she could stand it no longer. “Ramsay! When a lady reveals a potentially relationship-altering piece of information, she generally does no’ wish for the warrior tolaughat her.”

“I’m sorry, love.” Still chuckling, he stepped up in front of her and settled his warm hands on her hips. “It’s just…I suppose I’m still remembering things.”

“And do ye rememberbeware the Oliphants?”

He smiled down at her. “I do, aye.NowI remember, at least.”

He was going to drive her mad! “And?” She smacked his bare chest, then immediately rubbed away the sting. “Ramsay, please? Ye must tell me. Are we part of yer investigation? Are we enemies?”

His smile grew lazy as he lowered his lips. “Nay, love.” He brushed his lips over hers. “Far from it.” Another gentle kiss.

And as much as she enjoyed his caresses, she wanted answers. “Ramsay! Cease yer teasing!”

Chuckling again, he lifted his head. “I’d heard the rumors, same as every other eligible laird in the Highlands, love.”

“Rumors?”

“About yer da’s outrageous scheme to see his six daughters married. The rumors were that he was throwing his nets far and wide to catch husbands for ye lot, and any man who didnae want to see himself shackled to a daft father-in-law would be wise to avoid ye.”

Her eyes had widened throughout his explanation. “Beware the Oliphants?” she whispered.

“Aye. I was warning my fellow Hunters to stay far away from ye unless they were ready for marriage.”

Slowly, the truth began to dawn on her, and she felt laughter bubbling inside her chest. “But it turned out ye didnae need to come to Oliphant Castle!”

“Aye, because one of yer mad father’s daughters came tome!” He pulled her closer and lowered his voice. “And I fell in love with her, and am going to marry her, despite the ridiculous ultimatum.”

Her breath caught in her throat. “Will ye?”

“Aye. If she’ll have me.”

St. Crystal be praised! Ramsay McIlvain, the most caring man she knew, loved her and wanted to marry her! With a choked sob, Nicola threw her arms around his neck.

“Aye!” she tried to cry, but no words came out. She hoped he understood, because there was only one thing she wanted now.

Then she was kissing him, or mayhap he was kissing her, and she felt as if she couldn’t get enough. His hands were spread across her back, urging her closer, and she regretted pulling on her chemise, because the only thing standing between their skin was the thin linen.

She pulled at the hair at the back of his neck, as if she could tug him down onto the plaid by sheer will alone. He groaned low in his throat and flexed his hips forward, and she felt his hardness grinding against the junction of her thighs.

Exactly where she wanted it.

Wantedhim.

“Ramsay,” she panted. “Now, please!”

“Aye, my love. I’ll show ye what ye mean—“

“Well, well.” A new voice cut through the daze of her arousal, causing Nicola to freeze. “This is cozy.”

Chapter 10

Shite.

Shite shite fooking shite!

Ramsay cursed himself for letting down his guard, even for a moment.

Or, rather a bit more than a moment, considering how long they’d been here at the waterfall.
