Her gaze narrowed on him. “You’re too chipper.”

He chuckled. “What makes you think—”

“I have seen the two of you making moon eyes at each other over brunch, Surge,” she cut in, dry and direct.

“And?”

Discord sat on the stool next to the exam table. “I thought you weren’t interested in such things. You said your books are all the comfort you need.”

I frowned at him, confused. “You did?”

His lips curled inward, like he was trying to keep a secret. “That was true. At the time. Before Sam.”

“Shemade you feel something again?” Discord’s voice had gentled, though something stiff still lingered in her tone.

He nodded slowly. “Yes. She did. She does.”

Discord swallowed hard. “Then I am happy for you, Surge.”

I did not want to point out the fact that she did not appear happy for him. It was obvious enough. But I could not figure out why she would besmirch him his affections, not when she had plenty of her own. Can’t be jealousy…what then?

Surge either didn’t notice or chose not to react. “Thank you, Discord. And you said Longshot has not returned?”

“No, he has not,” she said, clearly concerned about that, as well. “Mal, do you think he’s in trouble?”

“If anyone can talk his way out of trouble, it’s Longshot. I think he’s fine.” I really, really needed to believe that. “He probably just stayed the night because it was so late.”

We all fell quiet for a beat, but the silence didn’t settle any of us.

CHAPTER 27

Tiger

My hands cupped two perfect, tailless asses.

I grinned to myself, waking slowly in Mal’s room, sandwiched between my two favorite people and feeling like the luckiest man in the galaxy. For a few blissful minutes, everything felt right in my world. Too right, and that thought worried me.

I should check on Surge.

I sat up and quietly moved off the end of the bed, before I dressed. When I looked back at the two of them sweetly dreaming, my heart lightened.

My life had changed immeasurably since I met Jenny Hollinger, and it was all for the better. I wasn’t dependent on my boss for my safety, nor was I sheltered by friends who had known me since I was a teenager. They had become my family in the five years I had worked for Jacaranda Cozz, but I had finally embarked on my own adventure without them. It felt good to nolonger depend on them. Not that I didn’t miss Treg and Ode, Jac and Camp Deo, and all those at the Ladrang compound on Halla, but I was finally living a life for myself.

Time to check on Surge.

I practically trotted to the lab. My mood had been so lightened by my loves that I could have floated there. But there was no Surge inside.

Strange. Maybe he felt good enough to join everyone at brunch.

I walked to the terrace, and sure enough, there he was. Right next to Sam. I couldn’t help but beam when I saw them. As I strolled out to the table, they both looked up at me with big smiles of their own.

A light breeze ruffled Sam’s blue streaked hair, causing me to remember what Grass had said to me the night before:Don’t trust the blue-haired girl. She is not what she seems.

Those words echoed inside me, momentarily causing a stirring of unease. I hadn’t told Mal and Jenny about Grass’s warning, because Jenny herself had blue hair. As did most Ladrian women. It was truly such a broad statement, and I wasn’t one to cast suspicion on anyone without some kind of proof. So for now, I kept Grass’ claim to myself.

I sat across from the pair, maintaining my light mood. “Good morning, Surge. Sam. How are you feeling?”

They both started to speak, but then Sam giggled coyly and said, “You meant him, didn’t you? Sorry.”
