“We’re at Sarah’s,” I said in a low voice, so as not to startle her. “I thought you’d want to say goodbye before we left for Orhon.”

I thought I saw her smile seductively when she realized it was me, but then it was gone. “No. Um, I’m still wiped out from this headache.”

“I’m so sorry. Can I do anything?”

There it was again, this time an unmistakably inviting smile. “You could join me on the bed.” She began to pull the bedspread back.

Her quick switch from not feeling well to being up for sex surprised me. “I don’t think that would go over well with your sister, if we stay in here instead of saying goodbye.”

She studied me closely, a stillness in her eyes that was unlike Jade. “Well, I’m staying here. I don’t…I don’t want to see her. My head hurts and I need rest.”

“Okay.” Again, odd, considering how close the two sisters were. “I’m sorry you’re feeling so bad. Maybe I’ll check with Sarah’s medical staff and see if they have something that could help—”

“No,” she said sharply. “I just…I want to go to Orhon.”

“Okay,” I said, blaming her erratic mood on the fact that she was feeling unwell. “We’ll wrap things up here and get moving.”

She burrowed back beneath the covers. “Thanks for handling everything.”

“Of course.”

I left Jade and joined Tiger and Abyss outside the ship, where they were chatting with Jac.

He gave me a curt nod as I approached. “I was just telling them that Sarah’s in bed. We were finally able to persuade her to rest, so I hope Jenny isn’t too disappointed—”

I shook my head. “She must have a migraine. The lights in her quarters are down. She’s in a lot of pain and not quite herself.”

Jac’s gaze narrowed on me. “How are you processing the whole conduit thing, Malice? It’s a lot to adjust to, isn’t it?”

There was far too much suspicion in his voice for my liking, and I wasn’t sure why. “It’s not what I expected—”

“What did you expect when you got involved with the sister of your father’s enemy?” he said, his tone sharp.

I glanced to Tiger, whose brows had lifted considerably at his boss’s tone.

“Jac, what are you getting at?” Tiger asked.

“Tiger, I know you are not the most experienced man when it comes to dating, so understand I do not say this to disparage you. But when someone likehimdates someone like Jenny, it’s not because of some romantic connection between them. It’s because he wants something. Isn’t that right, Malice?”

Now that Sarah wasn’t around as a buffer, Jac clearly had no issues disparaging me and showing his true feelings. A growl slipped out of my throat before I could stop it.

Jac glowered right back. “Everybody knows you can’t trust the tailless.”

“I had sworn to kill you, Jacaranda Cozz—”

“Whoa, hey,” Tiger said, immediately putting himself between us.

Abyss stepped closer, too, and I inhaled a quick breath as something like a blade seemed to pinch against the ribs behind my heart—barely a pressure point, but Abyss didn’t need to push harder to make her meaning clear.

She gave me a look, though her voice was calm when she spoke. “Youdorecall the conversation we had on the ship, don’t you?”

I held my hands out to the sides and asked, “If I may finish my sentence?”

“You may finish it, but I’m not moving my knife until I hear the remainder of your sentence.”

I shifted my gaze back to Jac. "Ihadsworn to kill you, for what I was told you did to Silence. But then Tiger and Jenny told me the truth about what really happened, and I knew there was no reason for us to be enemies. You did an honorable thing—”

He laughed harshly. “I do not hinge my honor onyouropinion.”
