“Sentimental…attached…I prefer to just think of him asours.”
“As do I.”
She hesitated. “I’ve never been good at sharing my life with someone else. You should know that upfront about me. If I screw up, I’m sorry in advance.”
I laughed, a low rumble of sound. “Jenny, sorry,Jade, I’m the same way. And as I understand it, Tiger has never dated anyone. At all. So, let’s not kid ourselves and assume this will be an easy adjustment for any of us, because it likely won’t be. We will make mistakes. What matters is that we fix the issues as they happen.”
She smiled so sweetly. “I promise to try, if you do.”
“I swear it.”
“Me too,” Tiger said as he walked into the lounge, barefoot and shirtless.
“There he is.” Jade beamed at him.
He made his way to the printer and retrieved his own neneed. “Seems a little early for such a deep conversation.”
Jade yawned. “That’s because it is early. How much did you hear?”
“Enough. Iamsentimental, and no, I’ve never dated anyone,” he said, confirming my comments about him as hejoined us at the table. “But neither of you sound like that’s a problem.”
“Not at all,” I said without hesitation.
“Same,” Jade added, sipping her tea. “I kind of like that you don’t have that kind of baggage. Between me and Mal, I suspect we have more than enough for three people.”
I arched a brow at her. “Is that what you think of me?”
She tried to smother a smile, and failed. “Your friends told on you.”
“Last time I trust those…wait a minute, why weren’t any of them with you for this mission?” The reality of our situation crept in. “And what’s the plan after this? At some point the palace will know I’m gone and that won’t go over well with Justice.”
“One thing at a time.” Jade crossed one long leg over the other. Her robe parted, exposing her up to her thighs, and I tried not to let the sight distract me as she explained, “We had to leave them behind, because Longshot is now a part of the council, so he can’t—”
“Oh, he’ll hate that.” I clicked my tongue, thinking of him on the council, under Justice’s thumb more than before. “Not good.”
“Discord and Surge are holding down the fort with Fake Jenny,” Tiger added.
I blinked. “Huh?”
“Justice has a team following me,” Jade explained. “So we hired a donor to look like me from a distance and decided Discord and Surge should also stay behind to make it look like nothing is out of the ordinary at your mansion while we tried to find and rescue you.”
I turned to Tiger. “What about a donor for you?”
He shrugged, unconcerned. “I am not even on Justice’s radar. No worries.”
My lips tightened. “I must say, that is strikingly naïve of both you and my friends.”
They exchanged a glance, before Jade said, “You think he has someone following Tiger, too?”
“I would be surprised if he doesn’t. Justice Bateen is nothing, if not thorough. But, it’s too late now, I suppose.” I paused, unsure of how to ask what I needed to know. “Jade, I must ask an uncomfortable question.”
“Of course. Ask me anything.”
“What happened when you were at Credo’s window? Why did you break down like that? You don’t even know him.”
“No, but heismy grandfather. Even if he’ll never know it.”
“Right.” I shook my head. “Somehow, I didn’t put that together.”
