Joy and relief lit up his entire face. “Moons above,Tiger?”
“Pipe down!” I hissed, not wanting him to give us away. “Get over here!”
He scrambled to his feet and dashed to the window, eyeing Jade skeptically.
“Who is that?” he whispered hoarsely. “What is going on? What are you doing here?”
I pulled another suit and shoes out of my pack, keeping my voice low. “Put this on. It has hover tech and it will help you float like us so we can break you out of here. And that’s Jade, also known as Jenny Hollinger—”
Mal gaped at her. “You’re mogged?”
She grinned and nodded. “Now hurry up and get changed!”
He slipped into the attire quickly and quietly, his eyes constantly drifting back to Jade. “I have to say, you’re fucking hot as a Ladrian.”
She gave her fuzzy tail a flirtatious twitch, which made Mal chuckle.
Within a few minutes, he was changed and the three of us were floating around the house.
“What is this suit?” Mal murmured. “I’ve never seen anything like it.”
“My invention, with the help ofCheesecake.”
He blinked at me. “The Earth dessert?”
I snorted before I could catch myself. “A lot has changed since you’ve been gone…wait, where’s Jade?”
We looked around, and my gut dropped when my eyes instinctively shot downward to the ground, but she wasn’t there. “Jade?” I hissed.
Mal floated around the other side of the building and at the edge, waved me over. I joined him and saw her hovering at a window, staring at the old man I’d seen. We came to her, and she hardly noticed us.
“Jenny, we gotta go!” Mal said in a low, urgent tone.
“This doesn’t make any sense,” she whispered, still staring inside at the still form on the bed.
“What doesn’t make any sense?” I asked.
“His ghost,” she said, glancing at me, her eyes troubled. “Can’t you see it?”
Mal frowned. “Are you okay, Jenny?”
Shit—he doesn’t know she’s a conduit. No time to explain now.
“Uh, Jade,” I said carefully, “maybe we should just—”
“Everyoneshould be able to see his ghost. It’s not in his body. It’s tethered by some golden light thing. But he can’t separate and he’s trying so hard.” Her voice cracked and tears slipped down her cheeks. “He’strapped.”
“What is she talking about, Tiger?” Mal said, confusion in his tone. “The fuck is going on?”
I stared in the room and saw none of the things she mentioned. “Jade, I don’t see it. Are you sure—”
“I’m fucking sure!” Her distress was palpable.
Mal growled, “Jenny, why shouldanyonebe able to see his ghost? You’re talking gibberish. Ghosts can’t be seen by anyone, except on Halla—”
“We are on Halla right now!” she yelled, not bothering to keep her voice down.
“What?” he gasped, and his hover suit dipped until he got it under control.
