Sarah shot him a look. “If your baby wasn’t making my feet swell, then I wouldn’t need to sit.”

“When they’re causing you distress, then they’remybaby?” Jac teased back.

Sarah stuck her tongue out at him and Jenny smiled. After seeing her break down earlier, her lighter mood uplifted me, too.

“Jac, your debt with Boundless has been forgiven—”

“What!”

“She bet on Jenny at Illiapol, so she’s newly rich.”

His hearty laughter drifted through the speakers. “Good for her.”

The signal dropped once more. This time it took longer to come back just as I caught the last of Jac’s words, “…but I’m going to have to.”

“Have to what?” I asked.

“I was just telling them I need you two to bringSovereignback here to let Treg take a look at her,” he said once the comms cleared. “I know you could probably do the repairs, but there’s issues with the interface’s coil and digital-whatever-he-called-it. I wanted you two to have her for as long as you need her, but with the communications starting to fail—”

“You need to get her to Treg, I understand.”

“So, when are you coming back?” Jac asked.

I looked at Jenny, knowing we were on the same page. “Should be soon. I could use your and Deacon’s help with something.”

“What’s going on?” Sarah asked, her features lined with worry.

“We’ll explain when we get there,” Jenny said.

“You can call Sovereign back remotely, right, Jac?” I cut in, not giving Sarah time to press Jenny, so she wouldn’t have to explain the whole Mal situation right now. “The auto-return will take her back to Halla?”

“Yeah,” my boss replied off screen.

“Good.” I nodded and tried not to feel as though our only escape from this place was about to leave us behind. “We will be offboard in two and we’ll come to Halla as soon as we can.”

Sarah leaned forward in her seat. “Be safe, Jenny.”

“Of course. I love you.”

Sarah smiled. “I love—”

The signal dropped once more, and the screen darkened this time.

Jenny took a deep breath and glanced at me. “I guess that’s that, huh?”

“Yeah.” I stood, as did Jenny. “We better get off the ship before Jac calls it back.”

We exited, and every step away fromSovereignfelt like leaving the only safety we had behind.

“I need to buy a ship,” Jenny said.

“Agreed, but I didn’t want to bring it up,” I said as we got back into the onworlder for the drive to Mal’s estate. “I don’t know how much money you made from Illiapol, and I’m not going to tell you how to use it. I don’t want you to think that I think of any of it as mine—”

She placed a hand on my arm. “I know you don’t think that way, Tiger, but if it weren’t for you and everyone else who helped me on the hunting ground, I would be dead and wouldn’t have any money, so it’s not a big deal. Do you want some money? They gave me too much.”

I laughed and shook my head. “Too much? You almost died! A lot!”

“Yeah, but according to Discord, I’m now rich enough to buy half of Halla with the money they gave me,” she said as I navigated the streets. “The others refused payment. Said they had plenty. But I know you don’t. At least let me transfer some credits to you and share.”
