I didn’t hesitate. I jumped up from my seat, looking at Tiger. “Then, let’s go.”
CHAPTER 29
Mal
“Iunderstand. I was just hoping Sam could come along,” Surge said, his demeanor disappointed as we broke atmo on Orhon on our way to Credo’s island.
Cheesecakewas filled with me, Tiger, Jenny, Longshot, Surge, and Discord, yet there was room for many more. Unfortunately for Surge, that did not include Sam.
“The whole point of Sam is that, from a distance, it looks as though Jenny is still at home,” Discord said, with a roll of her judgmental eyes. “I know you wanted your new girlfriend—”
“She’s not my girlfriend,” he said.
“Doessheknow that?” Discord mocked. “Because she seems awfully attached already.”
Surge shrugged. “Can’t help it if I’m lovable.”
“No, I suppose you can’t,” she said flatly.
Trying to keep Discord’s tone from slipping further into sarcasm, I interjected. “Not that I am ungrateful for thecompany, you two, but why are you here? You didn’t need to come along for this mission.”
“They are here to try to help Credo after you are ‘retrieved’,” Longshot cut in, reminding me of the purpose of our mission. “Or at the very least, get the layout of the island and the house for a future attempt. Tiger assures me this ship is submersible and has advanced cloaking tech, so a daytime penetration of the island’s defenses should not be an issue for this ship.”
“This ship’s name isCheesecake,” Jenny reminded Longshot, a mischievous glimmer in her eyes.
He looked down his nose at her and raised his hand to stop her from speaking further. “I don’t understand it and I won’t respond to it.”
A woman’s smooth voice came over the comms. “Cheesecake is a dessert from the planet currently known as Earth. The traditional recipe consists of cream cheese—”
“That’s enough,Cheesecake,” Jenny said, still smiling. “He’s just being grumpy for no good reason, not asking for a definition.”
“Then may I play a song to soothe you, Longshot?” the ship asked.
He glared at a grinning Jenny. “No, thank you.”
My girlfriend continued to playfully needle Longshot. “I think you mean, no thank you,Cheesecake.”
He looked to me for assistance, but I could only shrug. “It’shership, Longshot. She gets to name it whatever she wants.”
“The indignity of such a thing…” he muttered.
Tiger came on the comm from the cockpit. “Everyone, you have one minute to strap in.”
Jenny and I secured our belts, while the others struggled to find theirs.
“Just raise your arms,” Jenny said, and they did.
Lap belts shot out from between the seats and secured all three of them just in time. The ship lurched, not violently, but hard enough that we were all grateful for the restraints. Once we reached cruising speed, we unbuckled again.
Jenny leaned her head on my shoulder and sighed. “I hate that we have to do this.”
“I know.” I placed my hand on her thigh. “But this is the last time we will be separated,” I promised.
Longshot added, “Yes, once Malice isofficiallyretrieved, Justice wants him to return to the council, a full reinstatement. There should not be any more interruptions until you decide to make good on your discussion of regicide.”
She kissed my shoulder. “I hate that I have to take you back to Credo’s island, though. Makes me nervous and gives me butterflies in my stomach.”
I smiled and tipped her chin up to look in her beautiful eyes. “I swear, after this whole thing is over, I’m yours and Tiger’s.”
