Ah, shit. I need to be home by 6 to pick up Ellie. My mom has a gala she needs to go to.

SAHAR

Wednesday? I’ll definitely see you at the shop if you’re working.

JAY

I will be. I might have to sneak by the theatre before I leave just to kiss you.

That. His unfiltered longing was comforting. She never wanted it to fade. She hoped it’d continue to grow.

SAHAR

Yes, please!

JAY

Glad we’re in agreement. Also, what are you doing Sunday? I realize you might be too tired, but Ellie’s having another sleepover with my cousin’s kid, and I don’t have any plans.

SAHAR

This coming Sunday? The 28th?

JAY

Yeah.

SAHAR

I’m free as a bird. Come over? Are you working on that day?

JAY

I’m not, but I can aim to get to you by the time you’re home.

SAHAR

Excellent!

You used too many exclamation marks. Don’t bother with a heart.

Chill.

With a heavy sigh, Sahar set her phone down. Jay was so fucking good to her, and yet her bloody mind wouldn’t let up. How much more did she need to grasp that this man wasn’t like her exes? At what point would her mind stop tormenting her with unwanted thoughts about how she shouldn’t be too forward because it’d push him away?

What was a bloody heart emoji going to do? Make him run? Of course, it wouldn’t.Still.

SAHAR

With both their unruly schedules and the small distance, dating Jay was unlike anything else Sahar had known. When he was free, she was working. When she was free, he was at home with his daughter.

But he had tried. They both did.

He’d stopped by the theatre to kiss her when he could, and they’d stolen quiet moments at the coffee shop by extending their conversations until it got too busy for him to continue.

And their late-night phone calls were becoming her favorite way to fall asleep.
