Willa pulled their lobby door open. “There’s nothing to hate about it. Let it happen to you.”
“I let too many things happen to me,” Sahar countered.
Willa swung her arm into Sahar’s. “And I’ve always admired you for it. Your massive heart is going to take you far someday.”
“Or it’ll destroy me.”
Willa squeezed Sahar’s bicep. “My vote’s on the former. You’ll see.”
Sahar didn’t say anything. They went up to their floor quietly, and Willa opened the door to their place with another comforting smile. Setting the pie down on their kitchen table, she disappeared to the bathroom.
Meanwhile, Sahar sat at the edge of the sofa and typed her response back to Jay.
SAHAR
With Midnights, yes, I love every part of it. But I know it’s rare, so I’m trying to soak up every minute of what I’m sure will be the best job I’ll ever have.
Three dots appeared and disappeared for what felt like over a minute.
JAY
That’s really good, Sahar. I wish my sister felt the same way. She and her coworkers aren’t as close as you all seem to be.
Please keep that between us.
Fuck. It pissed her off to no end to read those words because so much of a job’s joy and safety started from the top, and Martin was only ever capable of ensuring that Martin was satisfied. They’d also heard whispers about the director ofHatchard’sbeing a shady scum, so that likely didn’t help either.
SAHAR
I won’t tell a soul. But I’m sorry, Jay. She deserves better.
She wondered if Alex was on social media. Sahar wanted to know her. She hoped she had a friend like Willa she could vent to when the days were frustrating. Lord knows she and Willa wouldn’t have survived the earlier years of living in the city if they hadn’t moved in together. Though she was glad Alex was close enough to confide in her brother, at least.
JAY
She does.
SAHAR
Is my asshole of an ex part of the problem?
JAY
She’s not fond of him, but I don’t think he’s one of her bigger issues.
SAHAR
I also hope you can leave the coffee shop soon. I realize it’s impossible sometimes not to have multiple jobs in our industry, but you deserve your dream job every day.
JAY
It’s not all bad. At least Henry and Katherine can be happier because a specific redhead from said coffee shop demanded they get a happy ending.
Sahar laughed out loud.
SAHAR
She didn’t demand. She nudged. Gently.
