Pay attention! I’m trying to help you.

JAY

I can’t because now I’m thinking about you on my lap.

To be fair, so was she.

SAHAR

Fine, pretend it’s me.

JAY

You home yet?

SAHAR

Yeah, just got in like twenty minutes ago.

JAY

Can you talk?

She let out a laugh and rang him, putting the phone on speaker. He answered immediately.

“How do you expect me to pay attention to you talking about fictional characters when I’m picturing you on my lap?” he drawled.

“Becausethisis important.”

“Okay, okay. I’m listening,” he said.

“I think Katherine being on Henry’s lap, the two of them very briefly battling their real feelings while simultaneously staying in character, could really show the audience a bit more of that longing that’s already present. The flashback does a brilliant job, and you know I love it, but this can be a small addition that shows it as well.”

“I like that. I’ll start tweaking that scene tomorrow. God, your fucking brain,” he uttered, his voice deep and raspy. She wanted to melt into it. Did he know how hot his voice was? Had anyone ever told him that?

“Yes! I’m glad you approve. I thought about it during the show and couldn’t wait to tell you.”

His laugh echoed through the speaker. “Is there space in that imagination for us or just the characters?”

Sahar smiled to herself, leaning against the sink, worming her foot over the textured purple rug. “I mean, now I’m definitely thinking about sliding onto your lap,” she admitted. “Among other things.”

A delicious groan tumbled out of him in lieu of words.

She exhaled a laugh. “Would you be able to have lunch with me tomorrow? Post-matinee or before, if that would be better?” she asked.

“I can do it before if it works for you. I’m off at twelve. But Ellie’s got art class, so after would be tricky.”

“Before works for me,” she returned. “We’ve got to be near the theatre, though. Is the same Japanese restaurant we went to that first time okay with you?”

“On one condition. This time, we sit on the same side of the booth, so I can soak up every second I have with you.”

Contentedly, she sighed. “I wouldn't have it any other way.”

“Have you given any more thought about Patrick’s invite for this Sunday?”

Moving her foot left and right onto the rug again, she pondered it once more. “You said Alex will be there?”

“She will, yeah,” Jay answered.
