Carter. Gavin cursed again. Sitting up, he withdrew his hand from her bra with a look of deep regret. “I need a minute.”
She bet he did. “I’ll get the door.”
Gavin stood, his pants tented in the front, then bent back down to give her one desperate, hungry kiss before he gathered their dishes and hurried down the hall toward the kitchen. Scarlett stood. “Coming!” she yelled through gritted teeth.
After straightening her clothes, she took a few deep breaths, willed her libido to calm the f— down, and walked to the door.
On the porch, Carter, Erin, and Thad stood grinning. Erin’s face held a peaceful glow. “I was finally feeling better, so we thought we’d stop by and spend some time with you guys.” She glanced around Scarlett’s shoulder. “Is that okay?”
What am I going to say, “No, we were about to have sex”?She glanced down at Thad’s eager face. Definitely not saying that. And Erin looked so happy to be out and about. How could she say no? “Of course it’s okay.” She stepped back and swung the door open. “Come on in.”
As the trio piled into the living room, Gavin returned from the kitchen. A quick glance told her he’d gotten his excitement under control, though he did still look the slightest bit flushed. As she passed him to grab some refreshments for their guests, his fingers slid down her arm and entwined briefly with hers. The moment of connection reassured her, and for the rest of the evening, as they chatted and played games and finally said good night—with Gavin agreeing to give Carter and Thad a ride back to the mansion so Erin could go straight home to rest—in the back of her mind she knew, they might have been interrupted, but that didn’t mean they were through.
What was it Scarlett O’Hara had said? Tomorrow was another day.
ChapterNine
Carter knew what he was doing when he insisted Gavin take them back to the mansion. Gavin knew he had because of the smile on his face as they walked out to the car. He’d been tempted to punch his friend, but that would lead to questions from Thad, and he wasn’t explaining that the boy’s father was being a cockblock and therefore deserved to have his block knocked off.
Gavin was an adult. He could wait till tomorrow for sex, right?
Right.
He made it back home, at least. A hot shower and a quick wank meant he actually got some sleep. Waiting till Scarlett was up the next day was a bit harder.
Then he got the text.
Scarlett: I’m going to do a big push this morning to finish the last chapters before Christmas Eve dinner tonight. Want to go together?
Telling himself her work was important—which it was, there was no doubt about that; much more important than his impatient penis—he texted back.
Gavin: Was planning on it! I’ll be there at five. Be ready to tell me what you’ve written.
Scarlett: No pressure!
The string of emojis that came after her words could’ve meant she was feeling nervous or laughing at him. He wasn’t sure which, but if he made her laugh, he’d count that as a bonus. Now he simply had to occupy himself for the rest of the day.
The build site was empty on Christmas Eve. Since he was here, he might as well take an interest in his investment, although he wasn’t worried about it in the least. Between Carter and JD, there was no way the resort could fail, so it was pretty much guaranteed money. But having a look around meant that he could at least see what to expect when he came back for visits. JD found him walking through the massive entry, gazing around with appreciation.
“About time you came to take a look.”
He shrugged. “Have to know where I’ll be living one month out of the year.”
JD laughed. “You’re more than welcome to stay here for a month or longer. You know that.”
He did know. Problem was, he never took off a whole month to be somewhere. He was beginning to feel more and more like he needed to do something to change that.
“Everything all set for the wedding?”
JD led the way toward the west wing of the building. “Oh yeah. Lily is nothing if not efficient. She had everyone whipped into shape weeks ago. Today was a day to pamper herself.”
“You two are a good fit.” It was a statement, not a question. There was no “seems like” about it; the pair fit together as seamlessly as any couple Gavin had met. He’d seen plenty who had massive cracks from the start—most of his da’s marriages were perfect examples—but not JD and Lily. “I like her for you. A lot.”
JD grinned. “I can honestly say I’ve never been happier.”
Gavin patted him on the back. “Good. That’s what I wanted to know.”
They took a look around the space that would be Gimme Two Sugars, as well as Lincoln’s yet-to-be-named restaurant. A good bit of the back of house was complete, ready and waiting for machinery and appliances. The east side of the hotel had space for an indoor/outdoor pool that would be completed in the spring, as well as several other leisure and entertainment spaces.
