And then she climaxed, clamping down around him. Carter shouted, the warmth of his release filling her inside, spurring her on to greater heights.

It took more time to come back to earth than it had seemed to take to leave it.

Carter stripped her naked and tucked her under the covers, joining her a few moments later. He chuckled. “That was…”

She pressed herself against him. “Yeah.”

Warm hands began a slow massage up to her nape, down to the curves of her rear. There was something she needed to do, she was sure, but for the life of her she couldn’t remember what it was. The travel, the sex…suddenly all she wanted was to sleep right here, cuddled up against the man she loved.

Her eyes popped open. Oh, that was it.

Carter lined his face up with hers on the pillow. Blue eyes held green. “I really hope this means you’ve made a decision about us.”

“I’ve made a decision about us. Have you?”

He kissed her, the faint taste of smoky tobacco and alcohol adding a masculine edge to the essence of Carter. “Erin, I love you.”

Her eyes closed, soaking in the words. Tears tingled at the backs of her eyelids.

“Hey.” Carter came up on his elbow. “You okay?”

She opened her eyes and took in the love staring down at her. “I love you too.”

His kiss was warm, tender. He kept close, his mouth brushing hers as he spoke the words she hadn’t realized she was desperate to hear. “I want you to be mine forever. I know it’s fast and I know we live a long way from each other, but I believe we can work it out. I want us to work it out so that we can be together.”

Relief hit hard. Yes, she’d hoped. Even felt certain she knew. But there was nothing like the actual words to put all her doubts to rest. “I want that too. I want to be yours. And I want you to be mine.”

“Forever?”

“Forever.”

Carter kissed her again. They talked through the afternoon, making plans for the future, figuring out what they could do now and what would have to be decided later. It was a few hours before the distraction of Carter’s wandering hands, their desperate lovemaking and intimate words eased and Erin worked up the courage to say what else she needed to say. Fear tingled in her belly at the thought of speaking the words out loud. What if this wasn’t what he wanted?

“Carter?”

His tongue traced over her breast.

“Carter?”

He pulled back just enough to glance up at her. His smile was the sexiest thing she’d ever seen. “Yeah?”

She took a deep, deep breath. Carter went back to tasting her.

“I’m pregnant.”

He froze against her.

She could feel the shaking start deep inside. Her fingers clenched in his hair. Forcing herself to relax, she said it again. “I’m pregnant.”

“What?”

It wasn’t a sharpwhat. He didn’t sound angry. She forced another breath. Glancing down, she met his confused look and prayed the third time was the charm. “I’m pregnant.”

He didn’t ask how this could happen, didn’t question her again. Instead he stayed there, frozen, staring into her eyes. She could almost see the gears turning in his mind, his brain putting the pieces together until he turned his gaze on her belly. Slowly he pushed his way down until he was even with her stomach. His breath teased her as he leaned in and placed his forehead against her navel. “A baby?”

“A baby.”

“Are you okay?”
