“How do we get them out?”

“We don’t, wife,” he warned her.

“But Dain—”

“But nothing. Your job is to keep you and the baby safe. I’m already having a hard enough time letting you help that bastard. Help me do my job; keep yourself safe, okay?”

“What are you going to do?”

“What I’m good at.” He smirked.

Livie laid her cheek against his chest, her breath warm on the tough skin of his neck as she murmured in his ear. “I think that would be difficult in a roomful of people, husband.”

“Don’t underestimate me,” he whispered back. The soft sound of her laugh rang in his ears as he called Cecil over.

When Kelly swept through the conference room door minutes later, Dain and the rest of the hostages had their hands behind their backs, Dain sitting next to the kid who’d freed the others earlier.

“I’m running out of time and patience, Derrick,” Kelly announced. “I want those codes, and I want to leave, and you’re going to make both happen.”

Derrick hesitated.

“Stan wasn’t the only one who had those codes, was he? He couldn’t be—someone else in the company has to have access, and if it isn’t you, who is it? I want to know. Now.”

Kelly’s demand was deceptively quiet, but still Derrick jumped. He glanced to Dain, then to Livie. Dain noticed his wife’s eyes filled with tears. The slight shake of her head gave the perfect touch of resistance.

“No,” Derrick finally agreed, “Stan wasn’t the only one with the pass codes.”

Livie’s sharp inhale broke the waiting silence. “No. Cecil, no.”

Derrick turned away as if he couldn’t bear to look at her. “Olivia knows the codes as well.”
