Kelly cocked his head, grin still firmly in place. “You saved me from having to do it. Stupid bastard got trigger-happy.”

He’d been the one to kill Stan? A tiny kernel of satisfaction settled in her churning belly.

The door to the conference room clicked open, startling her. Kelly’s gaze swung in that direction.

Cecil stood in the door. Olivia wanted to be angry with him; if Kelly was telling the truth, it was Cecil who had precipitated all of this. But right now, looking into his ravaged face, she couldn’t keep sympathy from rising. Kelly strode toward Cecil, who cringed back into the hall, holding a phone up with a shaking hand.

“The negotiator,” he said.

Kelly took the handset with a jerk of his head toward the conference room. “Harris, Jones, lock it down,” he barked.

Godzilla released her. He and his cohort changed places with Cecil, slamming the door behind them. Olivia heard the click of a lock, then receding footsteps as their captors walked away.

Cecil turned to her, reluctance in every line of his body.
