Don’t ever leave me, wife.But he couldn’t say it, not right now, not with emotion choking him. Right now he had to get her to safety.

Pulling away reluctantly, he traced a finger across her bottom lip. “A baby, huh? You sure know how to surprise a guy.”

Livie’s eyes brightened the tiniest bit. “After ten years I have to keep things interesting somehow.”

The emotion grabbed hold of his throat and wouldn’t let go. “You do that just by breathing, wife.”

She leaned her forehead against his, and he heard the faint hitch of her breath in her throat. “I knew you would come for us.”

“You’re fucking right I would.” And speaking of which… “We need to go.”

Livie’s gaze skimmed the rest of the kitchen without settling on any one thing. “What should we do about…?”

“Leave him. Someone else can take out the trash later.”

She didn’t argue, just gripped his hand as he turned for the door. Nothing felt more right than that touch, than her trust. It hit him square in the chest every damn time—and every damn time, he thanked God for the gift.

“Ready?” he asked, hand settling on the door handle. A glance back at Livie showed a worried look in her eyes, but she was nodding despite it. “Let’s go then. Quietly, okay?”

Another nod.

Dain pulled. The door swung open. He managed a single step into the hallway before the cool circle of a gun barrel landed on his temple.
