See her.

Touch her.

Because he sends a rush of aggression to the fore, I snap, “No singing.”

Aubrey stops and slowly turns to look over her shoulder. “I require music to work.”

“I have meetings this afternoon. I require perfect silence.”

Her chin tucks down, a smile spreading across her lovely face. That smile is a warning. If she was a wolf, she’d be ready to pounce.

Her eighties music obsession must be rubbing off on me because the first riff of Running with the Devil starts to play in my head.

Fuck. This human doesn’t know she’s dealing with a big bad bully.

This should be fun.

Chapter Fourteen

Aubrey

I find a bench at Penn Station and sink into it.

I wrapped things up late this afternoon and slipped out while Billy was on a video call. The last thing I needed was him insisting on driving me home today.

Or following me.

Because I’m meeting with Jamie and Jan here to talk about where we are on the Sentience case.

Jamie’s been super paranoid–I can’t tell if it’s legit, or she’s just scared, but she didn’t want to meet us at La Résistance this time.

A guy with weird energy slides onto the bench next to me, and I scoot over to put space between us. He’s wearing a baseball cap and a surgical face mask–the type a Covid-cautious person would wear–and his head is down.

“It’s me.”

My head jerks up sharply to identify Jamie under the cloak and dagger clothes.

“Don’t look.”

I lean to the side to look past her, like I’m checking out a sign.

“Everything okay?” I ask.

“No. I’m still being watched. How about you?”

Cold tendrils of fear filter into my chest at that question. But no, I’m not being watched by anyone except for Billy White.

Who I’m not going to think about right now.

Definitely not thinking of how it felt to have his tongue between my legs.

“No, all clear.”

Jan arrives, looking slightly annoyed about this meeting place. “This is where you wanted to meet?” she snaps.

“Shh,” Jamie warns, jumping to her feet and putting her back to us.

Jan slides onto the bench next to me.
