“Look, Kins, am I thrilled that you’re not our baby sister anymore? No. But I trust Reid with your life, with Blaire’s . . . and I don’t say that lightly. He’s the type of man who won’t back down from a fight and will always do what’s right. He’s the best of all of us. So, yeah, I’m okay with it. I know you’ll be taken care of, and I can relax a little.”
“Wow,” is all I can manage to say.
“He’s right, Kins. And it’s not just about him taking care of you, I hope you know that. Reid was there for me since the day I showed up in this town. I don’t know what they are, but he has demons. Like attracts like, and I’m a firm believer there’s a reason why I bumped into him first. His soul is broken, and you’re healing him.Youare perfect forhim.”
We’re perfect for each other, is the only thought that comes to my mind.
Baby Grace wiggles and coos as I take her from Ivy’s arms and snuggle her into mine. I rest my lips against the top of her head and breathe in a deep inhale of her sweet, clean baby scent. She has a head full of dark hair just like her mom’s, crystal-blue eyes just like her dad’s, and is the sweetest, most chill baby I’ve ever met. My nerves immediately relax, that newborn baby magic consuming me.
Ivy stands in the driveway and looks around. The cul-de-sac has two houses, separated by wild lupines and two dirt paths. The house she inherited from her late parents sits on the opposite side of Reid’s, tall and foreboding against the Sitka spruce and the view of the Olympic Mountains behind it. The house was purchased by an unnamed investor early this year, and it’s been sitting vacant ever since. Still, it houses deeply rooted trauma for Ivy and Sawyer.
“I haven’t been back here since everything happened with Brooks.”
“Are you okay?” I ask her, nudging her side with my shoulder.
“Yeah, it’s just emotional. He almost took everything from me. I had just gotten what I wanted most in the world back, and it was almost gone in an instant. This stuff with you has definitely set Sawyer spiraling.”
Unwarranted guilt settles in my stomach. I know deep down none of this is my fault, but I’m positive my kidnapping and Reid’s involvement with the MC have aided in his lack of support of the two of us being together.
“It was no one’s fault but the men who took me, I know he knows that, and I’m sure he just needs an outlet for his rage.”
“And that’s Reid,” she says. “He told me last night they hashed out their shit, but it’s going to take him a beat to be okay with it.”
“I know. It’s his issue to resolve. I just hope we can all move on at some point. Reid isn’t going anywhere.”
“Do you want to know what I think?”
I look up at my sister-in-law, someone I spent my childhood years wishing I could be just like. I’m so thankful she found her way back to us, even if the circumstances surrounding it were dire.
“Tell me.”
“I’m happy for you, both of you. You’re two of my favorite people in the world, and we meant everything we said the day we asked you two to be Grace’s Godparents. Everything is going to work out. They’ll be home to us before we realize it.”
Her last sentence is whispered, and I don’t know if it was to reassure me or herself.
CHAPTER 27
reid
“So, who is it?”I snap. Chaos lets the demand slip, but it isn’t without a warning glare. Sawyer and I are sitting in Chaos’ office since he refused to bring Sawyer into church. It wasn’t something I was going to push him on. That room is reserved for the members who’ve shown their loyalty and dedication to the club. Sawyer doesn’t fit that. Chaos doesn’t like outsiders, and he doesn’t trust easily, so even though he expected both of us this morning, he’s still not happy about it.
“Damon had a son. He was fifteen when we murdered his daddy dearest.”
“There’s no fuckin’ way, Cam. We checked and went after everyone.”
“He didn’t get his last name. Mom had only just told Damon about him within the last year.” He pauses and looks at Sawyer. “Hope you pay your man well, ’cause he knows his shit. If he’s open to it, I’d like his contact information. I don’t typically work with freelancers and prefer to keep things within the club, but he may be the exception, especiallyif he’s this discreet and good at what he does, and this wasn’t a one-off.”
“He’s the best there is. I’ll ask him and get you his info. He also likes to keep to himself and his wife. He’s the quiet, stalker type.”
Chaos nods his head and moves on with the conversation, giving us the information we came for.
“Proud new daddy was just starting to step into the role for Tyson, even bought him his first motorcycle. Apparently, he wanted Tyson to take over the Iron Wolves someday, introduced his new heir to the club, and had a lavish party where Damon gifted the boy three unwilling women. Tyson brutally beat and raped them—to death. I’ll spare you the details, but we’re dealing with a truly twisted fuck.”
Bile turns in my stomach.“Prez wants her for himself.”Kinsey was almost in this piece of shit’s clutches. I’m guilty of murder. Of torture. All my brothers are. But there’s a line you don’t cross, and women and children are firmly on the opposite side. Unless there’s extreme circumstances, any man who can harm a woman—especially rape her–doesn’t deserve to breathe. Anger courses through my veins. I’m going to kill him, and he’s going to beg me for it.
“What’s the plan?” I grind out through clenched teeth.
“We’re all goin’ in. Leaving enough here for security, Malice has the plans, and we’ll go over them, but I wanted to meet you two first. I’m gonna give it to you straight, boys, doing runs with someone not in our club isn’t something we do. I’ve got committee members not on board with this. We have to do an official vote.”
