“No. We didn’t mean for it to happen. She’s too fucking good for me, man. She’s everything that is bright and good. She saved me. She’s my light. I’m not walking away from her.”

Sawyer steps into my space, and for the first time in our decade-long relationship, I can’t meet his fucking eyes, terrified of seeing his disappointment, his anger. He handles everything with his damn fists and even though I’m bigger than him, he’s a better fighter, and I’d take anything he throws at me. Fuck, I deserve it.

The last thing I’d ever do intentionally is hurt him. I meant what I said, Kinsey and I didn’t mean for this to happen, but it did and it’s the best goddamn thing I’ve ever experienced. I’m braced for whatever is coming from him, but what he does next nearly brings me to my knees.

“Get out.”

“What?” His words are somehow worse than any punch he could have thrown at my face.

“You fucking heard me. I trusted you with her life!” he screams, his face red with palpable fury.

“Then you should know I wouldn’t be with her if she didn’t mean the absolute fucking world to me!” I yell back, matching his temper.

“I can’t believe a word that comes out of your fuckin’ mouth. I trusted you! What? You couldn’t have Ivy, so you went for my baby sister?”

“Low blow, brother and you fucking know it! I came on to Ivy one goddamn time before I even knew who she was. You still holdin’ on to that shit? It was a year ago! And your sister is not a fuckin’ baby. She’s a strong, grown-ass woman who can make her own decisions, and she chose me.” I take a step in his direction, pissed that this is how it’s going to go down between us. “Let me make something crystal clear, Kinsey ismine, and anything—anyone—who tries to stand in my way, will lose. She is everything to me, and I will take on anyone to be with her—even you.If that doesn’t tell you how strongly I feel about her, then you aren’t the man I thought you were.”

Sawyer continues to look at me like he doesn’t recognize the man in front of him, and it breaks my fucking heart after the decade of history we share. But I meant every word I said. Kinsey comes above all else.

“Fuck you, Reid!”

I ignore his words and turn on my feet to leave when I find Kinsey standing in the doorway with her hand over her mouth. She looks at me with a swirl of emotions behind her eyes, and I know she heard every single word. She blinks, and in an instant, it’s gone, replaced with rage and anger as she turns to face her oldest brother.

“Everyone can hear you screaming, you loudmouth!” she yells as she storms up to him, her hands balled into fists, all five foot two of her looking up at him like she’s about to knock him on his ass. “So now you know!”

“That you’re fucking him?”

Kinsey’s head jerks back, and I take a step in his direction, ready to knock his teeth out because I didn’t say that. To Kinsey’s credit, she knows it, and doesn’t even look back at me. She knows I wouldn’t talk about her like that to anyone, even if she hadn’t heard the majority of our conversation.

“Oh, so now you can talk about me fucking? Yeah, I’m fucking Reid, Sawyer. Get over it. It’s also so much more than that! Did you not hear a word he said to you? He’s willing to ruin your friendship to be with me, and that isn’t enough for you? That doesn’t speak volumes to you?”

“Do you have any idea of the shit that he’s into?”

“Do you mean the MC or in bed? ’Cause I know everything. There aren’t any secrets between us, and I trust him with my life. Up until five minutes ago, you felt the same way.”

“This is not what I wanted for you, Kinsey!”

“Well, it’s not for you to decide!”

Her brothers flood into the room, and she throws her hands up in the air in frustration.

“The fuck is going on in here?” Liam demands.

“Did we have to move in here to fight? There’s way more room next door,” Dallas asks, making Kinsey throw her hands up in the air in frustration.

“Ugh! You are all ridiculous! Reid and I are together. Get the fuck over it!” she screams at all of them and then turns to face me, marching right up into my space with her shoulders held high. I brace myself because I know exactly what my little fighter is about to do, and I’d never deny her. She stretches up on her tiptoes, grabbing the back of my neck, pulling me downto her level, and capturing my lips. My arms curl around her waist, forcing her back to arch as I curl over her and kiss the living hell out of her.

The room disappears while she claims me in front of her brothers. It’s over just as quickly as it started, and I don’t break eye contact with her as she looks up at me with all the love in the world.

“Take me home?”

“Yeah, sweetheart.”

“Kins—” Sawyer starts, but Kinsey spins quickly and points her finger at him.

“No! We’re done here. I warned you! I told you if you didn’t back off, I would leave. You want to lose your sisterandyour best friend? Think about your shit, Sawyer. We’re leaving.”

Kinsey grabs my hand, and I follow her out of the distillery, so proud of my woman for fighting for herself and what she wants.
