"Hey, asshole!" I yelled. "Leave heralone!"

He looked back at me with a callous snarl. Over his shoulder, I saw the girl’s terrified face but her eyes were large andhopeful.

"Mind yer own fuckin' business, bitch," he slurred back atme.

"Not happening!" Ireplied.

Adrenaline coursed through me like a drug. I wanted to hit him in his ugly fucking face and the power surging through me felt like I could make it hurt. In my peripheral vision, I saw tinges of red and black and felt the crackling of staticelectricity.

"I'm warning you," I said in a low, threatening tone that I barely recognized as I slowly stalked toward them like a predator. "Let her go, you gutless piece ofshit."

The lumbering drunk chuckled in amusement and finally turned to face me. The girl crumpled to the ground but was up again in a flash, hugging the wall as she stumbled the opposite way and disappeared around thecorner.

Good she got away but shit, I'mreallyon my ownnow.

"You want somma' this?" The man grinned, revealing a row of rotten teeth and wagged his vile tongue at me. "Lemme show ya how to take it like a good lil'bitch."

"Touch me and I'll make sure you never touch another woman again," I warned, curling my fingers with tension as the adrenaline, power, and anger coiled up within me like a slingshot being pulledback.

A flicker of hesitation passed through his eyes but it was gone as soon as it appeared. He lowered his head and charged at me likebull.

Oh God, oh shit, oh fuck!My brain cried out in panic but my feet might as well had been cemented to the ground. The edges of my vision clouded with spots of red and black until all I could see was his bald head coming straight at me. My arms shot out in front of me like cannons and I directed every ounce of fear, loathing, adrenaline, and white-hot hatred straight at this pathetic excuse for a humanbeing.

I shut my eyes, bracing myself for impact. What felt like a powerful gust of wind blew at my back, blowing my hair up around my face and pushing me forward to the point of almoststumbling.

"Arghh, what thefuck!"

Cautiously I cracked open my eyelids, still tense and anticipating the giant drunk man to barrel into me. But the sight before me ensured that would not behappening.

He crawled along the ground, eyes and mouth wide open in fear and pain. One of his legs bent at an odd angle and dragged behind himuselessly.

"Fucking bitch broke my leg!" he cried, drool and spit flying from his mouth as he dragged himself away as fast as he could. "Oh God, somebody helpme!"

I stood there stunned, then glanced down at my hands. Nothing looked unusual about them, nor did I feel the explosive amount of power that coursed through me just a second ago. Instead I felt really, really tired. Fatiguedalmost.

Whatever the hell I did took everything out ofme.

Out of nowhere, the sound of slow clapping jerked me into alertnessagain.

I spun around in a circle, looking for the observer who stood by and did nothing. Two shadowy figures walked toward me slowly from the narrow alley between the buildings. Bracing myself, I held my ground and gathered my little remaining strength as I waited for them to revealthemselves.

Raum and Sal stepped out into the moonlight. Sal emerged with his arms crossed and a bemused smirk on his face while Raum was the oneapplauding.

"Very impressive, Deja," he said, dark eyes twinkling. "You have even more dark power than werealized."

"The dawn of a new witch is here," Sal added, lookingpleased.
