Axe
“Finally. We finally got them,” I said, and turned my attention back to the recording of my meeting with Van and Niles. Soon they would both be arrested, which would mean that my life could get back to normal. My relationship with Kenzi would stop being an exercise in caution and we could get back to how things were.
“I’ll get this to my friend at the Atlanta police department.” Davian seemed unsure. I could see concern in his eyes and could hear it in his voice. “Be prepared for what will happen once Wilkerson and Harris find out. You and Kenzi might be in even more danger.”
He was right. Kenzi and I would be in danger, but nothing would make me happier than to see those two behind bars. They made my life a living hell. And everything coming their way, they deserved.
With a quick glance at Kenzi, I clenched her hand with a comforting squeeze. The worry splashed across her face was evident, and reassurance was in order. Pulling her into a hug, I wrapped my arms around her and held her close. “I won’t let anything happen to you. Davian andThe Societyare on our side, and neither will they.”
Davian, who was a man of few words, nodded and looked at us.The Societywould be there with us no matter what. As though on cue, the sound of raindrops hitting the large window grew louder as the storm approached. Kenzi stared at Davian, then looked out the window at the storm clouds moving in.
The sound of thunder filled the air, and waves of rain began to splatter against the glass. The Societywould continue to protect her until Wilkerson and Harris were behind bars. She closed her eyes briefly to appreciate the loyalty of the men sitting before her.
“Axe is right. I won’t let anything happen to you,” Davian said. “We aren’t leaving Chicago until Wilkerson and Harris are behind bars.”
By the time the guys left, I was convinced that Kenzi felt safe. The Societywasn’t just a group of ex-military men brought together. We were a brotherhood. We were all in this life together, and we vowed to watch each other’s backs. “We’re going to get through this together,” I said to Kenzi. “No one is ever going to take you away from me again.”
The black clouds roiled, forming a massive vortex. The storm would be a good one, with winds gusting at 60 miles per hour and hail the size of golf balls. As we sat on the couch and watched it take its course, the lights that adorned the living room flashed and the room went completely dark. It was then that we moved from our position to grab some candles.
After the rumbling ceased and the rain lightened to a soft, steady fall, Kenzi and I took advantage of the candlelit room by gathering a bottle of wine and two glasses. We snuggled together on the couch and the warmth of her body generated a small patch of heat between us. I wrapped my arm around her shoulders, my hand brushing against her collarbone. Kenzi pushed her body closer to mine and placed her head on my shoulder, her hair decorating my shoulder in a honey-gold blanket. Her hair smelled like strawberries and vanilla as I reached up to rake my fingers through the silky strands before tucking them behind her ear. Kenzi lifted her head and turned to meet my eyes. We looked closely at each other's faces in the half-light. Unable to resist, I lowered my head and pressed my lips to hers. Her lips tasted like wine as I continued to explore the cavern of her mouth.
It was torture, the way her breath puffed out in little bursts against my skin as she moved up my neck. The soft puff of her lips sank into my neck, and my skin burned in response. She trailed a line of kisses up my neck and paused to nibble at my earlobe. Such exquisite torture! Her kisses were soft and light and sent a surge of heat through my body. I lifted her from the couch and placed her on my lap. Taking hold of her blouse, I lifted it over her head and let it fall to the floor. I leaned forward and kissed the exposed flesh of her neck and collarbone, savoring the taste of her hot skin against my tongue. Her nipples were small but swollen as I played with them through the thin cotton of her bra. She moaned into my ear as I teased her nipples with passion. Unable to withstand any more teasing, I moved forward and pulled off my shirt.
My skin tingled in anticipation of what was to come next. Kenzi’s breath became more ragged as I placed my mouth over hers. Her tongue tangled with mine, leaving me wanting more. She nipped at my bottom lip and the sensation flooded through my body with a rush of heat so fierce it took my breath away.Kenzi adjusted her position and afeline smile lifted her face as her eyes darkened. She wasn’t trying to chase me away like before. Her desire for me was undeniable.
Sitting up, Kenzi hooked her fingers into the waistband of my pants and pulled me closer, then closer still until our bodies touched as closely as they could without becoming one.
This was where we wanted to be—on the brink of tumbling over into something both of us wanted. As I lowered my gaze to kiss her, she held my head in place. Her hands slipped further beneath my waistband—her fingers seeking skin. My heart thudded in my chest as I helped her out by lifting my hips. As she lowered the zipper to my jeans, her warm hands slid beneath the waistband of my boxers and jeans, easing both of them down my legs.
Without hesitation, I lifted the hem of her skirt and pulled her panties to the side. All I wanted to do was feel her. A tiny moan escaped her lips as I filled her.A delicate shudder like the quivering of a bell made its way through my body as I stretched her entrance with my swollen tip. The heat inside her was almost unbearable, and I wanted more than anything to plunge myself all the way into her all at once, but I held back. I wanted to draw out the moment and to give myself to her one thrust at a time. I slid my tip between her swollen lips and nestled into her entrance. With the smallest thrust forward, I was enveloped in pure pleasure.
Thrust for thrust, she met my movements by rocking her hips up and down. It was heaven and a place I wanted to remain forever. My cock pulsed with need as I slowly pushed myself inside of her while listening to her soft moans. The need to come intensified as I became more aware of every inch of her body pressing against mine. Like the storm outside, we were met with our release as the sound of thunder coursed through the air.

We entered Kenzi’s office, not knowing what the day would bring. There was no word from Davian’s friend at the Atlanta police department. It was only a matter of time, but not knowing whether or not Wilkerson and Harris were in custody was killing me. I could tell that Kenzi was on edge as well. When we had woken up this morning, she wasn’t her bright and cheery self. She hardly took a bite of the chocolate-filled croissant that she loved so much.
The silence in the office was broken by the ringing of Kenzi’s cell phone. The loud tone caused Kenzi to jump with a small gasp. As she stared at the screen, I could tell she didn’t want to answer the call. She let it ring two more times before she turned the screen my way. It was the Atlanta police department. Taking the cell from her hand, I swiped my index finger along the screen and put the phone to my ear.
“Hello?” I answered as I held the cell with a death grip.
“Where is Kenzi? I need to talk to her,” the caller gasped, like he was trying to catch his breath.
Instead of handing the cell back to Kenzi, I placed it on her desk and put it on speaker. “Whatever you have to say, McBride, you can say it to both of us.”
There was a pause and all we could hear was his heavy breathing. “Kenzi, are you there?”
“Yes. What do you want, Levi?”
“There’s something you need to know.”
“Say what you have to say, McBride.” I was losing my patience. If he didn’t say his piece, this call was over.
“This is my one and only call for a while. I’ve been arrested. Van and Niles are on the run. The last thing they said was that they were going to get even. Your mom is in danger. I think they are going to kill her.”
“What?” Kenzi seethed with disbelief. “I don’t believe you.” Her voice cracked with emotion and sadness. Loss and despair washed over her in waves as she tried to speak. “This has got to be some kind of joke.”
