“How is Ms. McCall?” he asked. “This must be very difficult for her,”

My father knew as well as I how difficult it had been for Reyna. He knew Rui Salko personally and was well aware of what he was capable of. Once my father witnessed Rui cut off a man’s fingers one by one until he got the answers he needed. If by the last one he didn’t talk, there were always ten toes left to get the information he sought.

“She is handling it the best she can. I thought I might take her out of the estate when she wakes up. Maybe it will get her mind off of what she’s been through.”

My father didn’t seem impressed with my suggestion when his head twisted my way. “Do you think that is wise? We have no idea where Salko is or if he has men in Chicago. It could be dangerous for her to be out in the open. Exposed.”

“Marcus and Calvin will be with us. Besides, I don’t plan on exposing her.”

“I hope you know what you’re doing, son.”

I left my father and Mika and headed to my home gym. My father was a smart man and very cautious. There was no way I would put Reyna in danger. If something didn’t feel right, we would be back here. Lincoln Park Zoo wasn’t exactly a feeding ground for hoods. There would be too many people.

Showered and dressed, I went to Reyna’s room. Once there, I found that she was no longer lying in bed. I was about to leave when I heard the bathroom door open. Standing in nothing but a towel, she was the most beautiful woman I had ever encountered. Her hair was wet, and her long waves hung low across the breast. There was no make-up on her face, and she was even more gorgeous.

Her eyes met mine, and I thought she would remind me that I was in her room, invading her space. She just looked at me without a word with her beautiful brown eyes. Walking over to where she stood, I placed my hand on her cheek and lowered my mouth over hers. The scent of cherry blossom and vanilla filled my senses. It was heaven as her lips parted and allowed me access to her warmth. The kiss was brief—replaced by regret as she pulled away. “What time is it?”

“It is just after ten,” I began, swiping her bottom lip with my thumb. “Mika is holding breakfast for us whenever you are ready. I thought after breakfast, I would take you out and show you some of Chicago.”

Reyna’s eyes were on mine and accompanied with a smile. “Really?”

“Yes. Pick out something comfortable. I’ll be waiting for you downstairs.”

Leaving her with one more kiss, I closed the door and headed down the stairs. There were still a few calls I needed to make. Of those, the most important was to Patton. I needed to find out if he had a location on Salko.

“Patton, tell me you have a location on Salko,” I said, as I closed the door to the library.

“I’m sorry, sir, but I have nothing. It’s like he has become invisible. No one has seen or heard from him since…” His words dropped off, but I knew the timeline. “Are we sure that Salko was responsible for the break-in at Reyna’s apartment?”

I couldn’t be sure of anything, but I trusted my father. He knew Rui Salko better than anyone, and when I told him what had happened, he knew it was Reyna’s father. “My father seems to think so, and he is never wrong. He’s out there. I’m sure of it. Have you been able to get anything on the two men that broke in?”

“Not yet, but we have a few leads. If anything turns up, I will let you know.”

The information Patton shared was less than acceptable. I knew he was doing everything he could to find out where Salko was. It still didn’t sit well with me that we had no information on him or his whereabouts. He wasn’t invisible like Patton said. Sooner or later, he would make a mistake, and he would show himself.

The building anger against Davian had vanished when he suggested getting out for a while. After an amazing rest and a long shower, I felt refreshed. I still wasn’t happy about his domineering ways but decided not to dwell on it. I would remain under his constant demands, so I might as well make the best of the situation. Davian suggested that I wear something comfortable. So many options filled the closet, I had a hard time deciding what to wear. No thanks to Davian. Since it was still warm, I thought I would be most comfortable in a sundress and flats. I wasn’t sure where he would be taking me, but it didn’t matter as long as it was away from the estate. Not that I didn’t like my accommodations. I just want to know that I wasn’t a prisoner.

Braiding my hair off to the side, I took one last look at myself in the mirror and decided that I looked pretty good. Davian was right. Everything I needed was provided for me. He supplied me with the best cosmetics that money could buy, but instead of going all out, I opted to wear only mascara and a light layer of pink gloss on my lips.

When I reached the bottom of the stairs, I wasn’t sure where the kitchen was, but it wasn’t hard to find since the scent of bacon filled the entryway. Taking a chance that the way to the kitchen was through the door underneath the staircase that Mika had entered when we first arrived, I pushed it open to find that it only led to two other doors. It must have been the servant entrance. Closing the door behind me, I stepped back out to the entryway and walked toward the open archway, which I was sure would eventually lead me to the kitchen.

The first room I came upon was a sizeable living room with a fireplace on one wall that stretched to the ceiling and a set of floor-to-ceiling windows on another. The massive room was decorated with light colors. There was a large accent rug splayed across the washed oak wooden floor with two leather couches, which faced each other and were separated by a large rectangular coffee table positioned on top. I imagined what it would feel like to be relaxing on the couch while the warmth of the fireplace heated the room.

The further I walked inside the room, to the right, was a large dining table with twelve chairs. Only an archway separated the two rooms. As I passed the dining table, I could hear voices coming from inside the kitchen, which was visible through a set of glass doors that were currently closed but could slide open to make the area even more spacious. It was clear why Davian brought me here. It was beautiful.

Through the glass doors, Davian’s eyes met mine as I made my way towards where he was standing. He was at the door before me and slid it open. Instead of the suit that he usually wore, he was wearing designer jeans and a light blue polo shirt. I had to admit, the casual attire made him look less intimidating but just as sexy. Leaning in, he placed a tender kiss on my cheek. “You look beautiful.”

Placing my hand in his, he led me further inside the kitchen, where Mika was standing with a smile upon her face. “Good morning, Miss Reyna. I hope you are hungry.”

“I’m starving,” I said as I took a seat at the bar where the only place setting was set.

The breakfast that Mika prepared was amazing. I never tasted anything so good. Every bite was more satisfying than the last. Every so often, Davian would look up from his plate and smile at my moans of satisfaction the delicious meal had caused. By the time I had finished, my stomach was content, and I could hardly move. The outing the Davian planned had better include walking. Otherwise, I would explode.
