Her heart immediately began to race.
Play it cool, Daisy.
‘What do you want?’ she asked, trying to keep the tremor out of her voice.
‘I was hoping I could see you. We need to straighten some things out.’
So many thoughts filled her head. Could she handle this conversation right now?
‘Please, Diz, I know I’ve always acted like an idiot towards you, but you’re one of my oldest friends and I’d really like to see you again. No funny business, I promise. Bring Adam with you if you want. If he’ll deign to come,’ he added.
Daisy sighed.
Tell him, a voice in her head urged her. There really wasn’t any point dodging the issue any longer; he was bound to find out from someone else soon.
‘I’m not with Adam any more. We split up.’
There was a long silence at the other end of the phone.
‘What?’ Zach said eventually, his voice gruff and surprisingly shaky sounding. ‘What happened?’
‘Nothing, we just grew apart. It had nothing to do with you,’ she added quickly.
Liar.
‘I don’t believe you, Daisy,’ he said quietly, as if reading her thoughts. ‘Are you still in the same flat?’
‘Yes, but—’ she started to say, but Zach interrupted with a curt, ‘I’m coming over.’
‘Wait… Zach—’ but he’d already put the phone down.
So, all she could do now was mark time until he arrived.
Every nerve in her body jangled.
She was a mess.
Definitely not in any fit state to see Zach right now.
She’d been working in a hot studio all day and looked like hell.
She ran upstairs and quickly took a shower, then dressed with shaking hands.
She checked, then double checked her appearance, brushed her teeth, sprayed herself with perfume and changed her clothes again.
It was imperative she felt completely in control when he arrived.
After pacing up and down her living room for a few minutes, she heard a loud banging on the door. Taking a deep breath, she opened it.
Zach stood there on her doorstep, gazing at her.
He looked so good, it took her breath away.
‘Why didn’t you tell me before?’ he demanded, in his customary gruff manner.
‘I… I don’t know. I guess I was afraid.’
‘Of what?’
